Ex-border agents sentenced for shooting smuggler
AP
EL PASO, Texas -- Two former U.S. Border Patrol agents were each sentenced Thursday to more than a decade in federal prison for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler and then trying to cover it up.
Ignacio Ramos was sentenced to 11 years and one day, and Jose Alonso Compean was sentenced to 12 years. Both were fired after their convictions on several charges including assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction of justice, and a civil rights violation.
The men, neither of whom spoke in court, will be allowed to turn themselves in Jan. 17.
The agents have proclaimed their innocence in the Feb. 17, 2005, shooting of admitted drug smuggler Osvlado Aldrete Davila.
Aldrete was shot in the buttocks as he fled across the Rio Grande into Mexico after a confrontation with Ramos and Compean. The agents said they shot in self defense, but prosecutors charged that they had no reason to shoot at the fleeing man, who later claimed he was unarmed.
Since their convictions, support for the agents has swelled. Several prominent law makers, including U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, the Wisconsin Republican who chairs the House judiciary committee, have even called for a Congressional investigation into the agents' prosecutions.
The union representing most rank and file Border Patrol agents established a legal defense fund. And civilian border watch groups have asked the U.S. Attorney General's office to review the case and throw out the jury's guilty verdicts.
I knew that from the moment it was posted --- no link, no background infornation, just Lou Dobbs.
Best you don't try breaking in any houses around here.
Obviously not the DOJ report.
You have the shooters side and the drug cartel guy's side.
There was evidence regarding that the illegal Mexican drug cartel guy was trying to bring his load of drugs across in his car.
We know he did not stop.
We know the officers said they thought they saw a gun after the chase and fired.
I figure if they were certain there was no gun, why not just go up on the guy and execute him instead of cautiously shoot from a distance and feature the butt shot?
The drugs are with the bad guy.
He's a known drug runner.
They are not known to stop when caught and always try to go back to Mexico from all historic reports we hear from the border clashes.
The border patrol guys had no trigger happy records.
They screwed the pooch regarding not reporting the shooting and that is the only mistake (outside of not killing the guy they shot at) IMO.
I am not going to go with the Mexican Drug Cartel guy's version that the DOJ wants to say is golden. It is only a golden shower IMO.
I don't think he paid attention to you the last 4 times you threatened this.
You understand. We do our best, but usually miss. These guys missed 14 times anyway ~ we have only the word of a notorious drug smuggler that he was there to get shot.
It's the "trying to cover it up" part that got them sentenced. If we can't trust our cops who can we trust? If they were allowed to get away with it, then nobody-- not you, nor me, would be safe from criminals in uniform.
And the terrorism supporter got 28 months to add insult to injury in relation to this case.

To have integrity, you have to possess it. Ever since the advent of FOX News, Lou Dobbs has been on some sort of oddball crusade, which leads me to believe he's lost alot of viewers.
Yes. That's because you've tampered with the shooting scene. That's considered consciousness of guilt.
LEAVE THE EVIDENCE ALONE UNTIL THE FORENSICS TEAM RELEASE THE SCENE.
Don't think so. Not in my community. They wouldn't even care about the shell casings, get my statement, and hopefully find the creep dead.
I sincerely hope that you are never in a defensive shooting--you will end up going to jail with that mindset governing your actions.
Thank you for getting it.
It's like any Michael Savage thread.
BTTT for later...
Listen, I don't care who you are, you don't shoot a fleeing man in the back and not expect to go to jail. Period.
Hell, there is no question the guy fired his shotgun fifteen times and finally hit him in the ass.
Sometimes you end up in jail just because you are stupid. I hate it was BP, but any other cop in the US that did the same thing would be paying the same price.
I sincerely doubt that you have any real idea what goes on in that situation, and I hope you never have to find out.
Alberto and that ol'gal there in Elpaso-Juarez has jus' gotta' be doin' some stuff together for this to happen.

I answered Anna question...what are you talking about?
(You're wrong about the Crime Dog, too.)
