A taxi driver being a resident of the community? That makes little sense - the nearest taxis are in Lancaster, unless there is some kind of small service for rural areas out there.

Seriously, Nickle Mines is VERY out in the middle of nowhere. About as rural as Lancaster County gets nowadays.

Anybody can live anywhere, we don't know if the shooter was Amish, or former Amish, or not at all. In fact we only have rumors right now. How many of the old houses have been split into dupluxes and rentals, not to mention he may have simply worked with that community, rather than lived there. No need to jump to conclusions right now. BTW, I used to live a half hour from there.

It must be rural! I was born & raised in the Reading area & I never heard of Nickle Mines until today.

It's pretty common for people to work for the Amish, driving them hither and yon on errands and such. Not technically taxis, but usually refereed to as taxis.

I've seen the ads outside of Shady Maple farm market -- either Amish looking for someone to taxi them, or people willing to taxi the Amish about.

This is sickening gutwrenching news to hear. My heart is breaking to bits. How can something this horrible have happened to these children? This man is a monster!

"Taxi" drivers are usually retired guys who drive the Amish around in white passenger vans. They're contracted by word-of-mouth and are usually English friends or neighbors of the families. My cousin and uncle drive for the Amish (likely even some of these same families), hauling loads of lumber, wood products, farm equipment, etc.
