Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
I think now, with this revelation from the press conference, it is obvious why he chose the Amish school - thinking it would allow him time to do his evil deeds before anyone got to a telephone.
i would expect someone that methodical to be extra careful NOT to let anything show. If someone got wind of something being wrong, it could *ruin* his plans.
I agree. At the presser, the PSP Col. stated several times that it was the 'accessiblity' of the school, not the Amish nature that made it the killer's choice. No access to phones. No way to call for help to stop his plan. The ultimate in evil.
That makes my blood run cold but I totally agree. Tactical error on his part but too bad for him. At least now he has a LOOOOOONG time to think about what he did.
I'm just speculating and trying to make sense of this atrocity.
Then start a new thread!
This one is about showing support for the families in their time of loss.
Beautifully written.
Amen.
I haven't seen anyone blame the police.
What does a responsible, law abiding individual keeping guns have to do with this horrendous crime other then perhaps if such a person was in the vicinity, they may have been able to prevent it? People like you scare me.
One of the posters here said yesterday we may learn more from the Amish in this than they from us, and today that is clear to me.
I am not going to ask them to be any different because evil befell them, but more than that I am witnessing their faith and how they live.
As far as I know, photos and names of the victims have not been released to the media. This is good! Personally, I hope the Amish are able to maintain their privacy in the face of media pressure.
God bless our dear Amish brothers and sisters.
very true Metmom, I think with 'some' of the teenagers who have committed or tried commit these crimes have done some talking. But, the police office (who did a fine job with the reporting) mentioned it is not unusual for these individuals to lead double lives and internalize it.
I will pray for continued protection over all our children and peace for their families. I will pray for peace for everyone as we tried to sort this out.
I would suggest you check what the moderators have posted about getting off-topic on this thread.
I wish someone would run a fully-loaded manure spreader down the road where all the newshog vans are parked as to displace their electronic manure spreaders.
well said, Joe. While I agree with dirtboy about this not being a 2A debate, I have to say that, when reading your other posts, you ascribe to the sheepdog vs. sheep mentality and I think that's what you were alluding to. Unfortunately, it seems that in this area of the country, there may have been too few sheepdogs and that is what permitted this tragedy to happen.
Amen, Michael. Thank you.
Sadly, mine is incredibly short. That's why I keep a list right nextto the pc. A VERY long list.
This thread has made it several names longer.
Prayers for the girls, their families and the Amish community.
God bless all of you at the hospital; you are doing God's work.
There were a couple comments about the police moving in too quickly earlier in the thread.
Thanks. Missed that.
It's perfectly possible. Romans 13 has much to say about governing authorities and being subject to them. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to not interfere when the government is administring justice or fulfilling what they consider is its responsibility.
Romans 13 informs Anabaptist theology.
