Where, perhaps,
fake = a mostly ape skull with some human skull pieces glued on that no one else has noticed yet; and
fraud = a mostly human skull with some ape skull pieces glued on that no one else has noticed yet.
Or "fake" = "some thing that never lived but was jigsawed up out of bone flakes and pottery shards." "Fraud" = "some thing that lived but they call it a transitional and it's not it's just some extinct thing or other."
