Likewise, some evos equate the religious to fanatics, and believe that it will lead to ignorance and another dark age.

No, this is quite incorrect. I don't know of a single Freeper who matches your description, and you do this debate a large disservice with such misrepresentations.

While it's true that this is the slanderous charge which the anti-science folks make against many science-literate Freepers, no one equates "the religious" as a whole to "fanatics" or harbingers of a coming dark age. Ironically, many of those who are falsely accused of being "God-haters" or "anti-religious" etc., are themselves actually Christians (which just goes to show how ludicrous the slanders of the anti-science folks can be).

There are, however, *specific* anti-science folks on these threads who are indeed accurately described as fanatics and who, if they had their way, would destroy the effective teaching of science in the United States, even if they *think* they're "protecting" science when they attack what they see as "heretical" fields of science.

I am not referring to science in this observation. I've been most impressed with most of the evos on these threads, as they will admit that science doesn't address whether or not there is a God. I believe that evolution, and God can both exist. That is my belief. Some believe that evolution exist, but there is no God. It is their belief, and they have the right to have this. Both of these are from a philosophical view, as science does not address whether there is, or is not, a God.

These threads do stray from basis in science at times. Most evo's on these threads, like yourself, stick to arguing science. The insults are often the result of frustration. In nearly every single thread, however, I have seen some sort of reference to the dark ages, and ignorance, in reference to religion. Currently there are remarks on this thread alluding to how one can understand the possibility of imprisonment for descent in the past, from their experience on these threads. I do feel that these comparisons are made out of a need to protect what one holds dear. In some cases, that is science, and in others that is religion. It is an observation, and not an insult. As to whether or not the fear is justified, I can not answer.

I meant to include that I was not referring to the religious as a whole. Which was why I kept using the word "some" in my post.

RightWingProfessor: Speaking only for myself, my agenda is protecting science, and biological science in particular, a pursuit on which I've spent most of my working life, from political attacks by religious fundamentalists, who seem to think we're still in the Middle Ages and that the Enlightenment never happened.
