WASHINGTON Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.
"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

Perhaps "Bushbot" wouldn't be used if the "other side" stopped telling people that they "never voted Republican" and stopped calling people names for deciding to vote on principle instead of voting for the least repugnant choice.
I have voted GOP since the first election in which I was allowed to vote. I will now vote for the most conservative choice available. If there IS no conservative choice, I won't fill that portion of the ballot.
The number of people on this forum who don't recognize or won't admit to a HUGE backlash amongst formerly loyal GOP voters is astounding.
He doesn't give a cr*p about his oath of office. If he did, he would have followed his vow to uphold the constitution of the state of Florida in the case of Terri Schiavo.
Article one, section two.
This is just more of the same.
LOL - raising ALL levels of legal immigration a couple hundred thousand is certainly NOT absorb[ing] every human being on this planet - last I checked, that was in the billions. Again, let me know if anyone has proposed doing that.
Thanks for the link. I (obviously) do not think it is "trolling" to ask honest questions.
Once again, you are using a few responses you specifically trolled to get as an attempt to impunge the motives of the larger population of those opposed to illegal immigration. That is a despicable tactic, quite frankly - something I would expect from a Democrat, not an alleged conservative.
You never qualified it, you merely said that you were for raising ALL levels of immmigration and then questioned why there would be a quota at all.
The two together imply that you advocate letting any and all come regardless.
yes, but what are we to do about it?
It's not, as we've discussed before. Which doesn't change the fact that you are a troll.
Not at all - bwteim claims specifically that Jeb Bush is "unfortunately clouding the discussion by apparently grouping illegals with legal immigrants in his email to the LA Times and labeling them all as immigrants."
I don't think it is "unfortunate" - it is ACCURATE - and last I checked, it is not a slur to simply point out the definition of "immigration" : )
My God, you can't comprehend! For the third time, READ.
Dictionary definition: TRAITOR....... "One who betrays a cause"!!!
If you need to have an English teacher explain how commas and the word "or" relates to that full definition, ("One who betrays one's country, a cause, or a trust, especially one who commits treason"), try going to your local grade school and asking for help. You are embarrassing yourself.
Some of you people seem to have one goal--be the #1 denialist of facts on FR.
For the record, then, I am not for raising the immigration levels to BILLIONS per year ; )
I'm fine with setting Hispanic legal immigration to zero for 10 years and letting other people in from around the world. And I would put a fence on the Mexico border. Hispanics behave as they're the only poor people in the world who deserve to immigrate to the United States
Wow. What a concession.
That's fine with me as long as you admit there's no evidence of "treason" under the U.S. Constitution.
No, it is not. You had a handful of responses on your trolling vanity post, and from that you extrapolate the actual intent of millions of conservatives?
Fooey.
Oh goodness. Is it really worth so much of your time? Don't you have some better points to hammer?
susie
Fair enough, thanks for the clarification.
Just out of blatant curiosity do you think we should favor one country over another with respect to how many folks we let in?
In my opinion it's discriminatory to not set even numbers across all countries we're willing to take immigrants from.
That being said I think there are also countries we should take no immigrants whatsoever from.
We shall see which one gets passed and signed into law then : )
Talk to Bikers4Bush then - if either of you find someone proposing that, I'm sure you will let me know.
