WASHINGTON — Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.

Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.

"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

Amazing, huh? Actually, we probably agree on more stuff than you'd think.

Yeah I got it clawrence, you sent it to me already and you posted it at my request. So what? Does that mean the argument is moot? How about this, there are some who want to stop illegal immigration by calling all immigration legal.

I would personally like to see all illegal aliens deported, although I confess I don't have any idea how that could be done in a practical way.

It's so simple, I'm surprised you didn't think of it yourself. Self deportation.

1. Enforce existing laws against hiring, and increase penalties.

2. No more catch and release.

3. Announce a future guestworker program, but stipulate that anyone found illegally in the country after a certain date (no more than 6 months from the date you announce it) will never be allowed to be a guestworker or come into the country again.

4. Do something about the anchor baby issue (I don't agree that the 14th ammendment was intended as it is now being interpeted, but I'm not sure how we address that).

5. No govt. benefits except for emergency care (after which you are hauled back to your home country).

I don't think you would have to forcibly deport all that many. However, it's ok, we can create jobs (don't politicians love to do that?) by increasing the number of ICE employees if need be.

Jeb can kiss goodbye to any future political aspirations for anyone with the surname "Bush", at least in the Republican party.

There is nothing "hateful" about requiring people who come here to follow our laws.

There is everything "hateful" about politicians who refuse to listen to the public on an issue of compelling national public interest, pandering to the exploiters of cheap foreign labor, cozening up to the "President" of a third rate third world rathole which seeks to annex part of America incrementally and conspires to violate our borders,
and granting amnesty to individuals who pushed their way ahead of legal immigrants who are following our laws in attempting to gain entry to the United States in accordance with our laws.

One of the primary responsibilities of an political entity which aspires to the title of "Nation" is to protect its borders. A responsibility which apparently is beyond the grasp of the good governor, his wife, and the governor's brother.

If "Jeb" and wife don't like - tough. They'll live with the consequences, one way or the other.

Clarence, no offense, but this is the Fifth time you posted that link to your thread. My reply is the same:

You have about 8 "votes" against legal immigration, extrapolate all you want. IMHO, it is a NON issue.

That's true too, which is why I would never claim that was "blurring the issue" or framing of the argument" that is bullsh*t : )

By Deborah Sharp, USA TODAY

The daughter of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was arrested Tuesday in Tallahassee on charges of trying to fill a fake prescription for the popular tranquilizer Xanax. Bush and his wife, Columba, issued a statement that they were "deeply saddened" by the incident involving their middle child and only daughter, Noelle, 24. They asked the media and the public to respect their privacy "during this difficult time so that we can help our daughter."

He seems to be deeply saddened that people would say bad things about dope fiends and other criminals.

"Those most vocal in this current debate are the shouters and screamers who often have limited understanding and an even more limited vocabulary."

I know that. I've been around for a while. I guess I don't understand why such accusations of treason on the part of the President or the Governor of Florida are allowed to stay in public view.

They violate some of the basic premises of the rules of Free Republic, in my view.

I don't see how such messages or their posters contribute anything of value here. Disagreement with the administration is fine. Treason is a very serious charge. It's the only crime mentioned in the Constitution, and it carries the death penalty.

Calling the President of the United States a traitor is the same as saying you want him executed. I say that FR doesn't need that crap.

As all immigrant groups* vote Democrat, Democrats approve of abortion, abortion is the murder of a child.

Get rid of abortion, then we'll talk.

He sends the Coast Guard and Navy to track them on the high seas so they have no chance to land here.

"The plan is to keep putting forward Bushes and Clintons to the voters. They are the new royal families of America, and even though they hate each other, they want to make certain that the crown stays in the family. That's why Bush Sr. is suddenly so chummy with Bill Clinton. They are getting ready to hand the crown back to Hillery."

A jury could indict based on the available evidence.

SOME want to stop LEGAL immigration as well:

I love it. You start a vanity to solicit opinions about legal versus illegal immigration and now use it as a debating point. That's pretty low.

The strong majority of those opposed to Jeb and George W. Bush on the immigration issue are against illegal immigration.

Is a misdemeanor a "crime"? Is running a stop sign a "crime"?

1. An act committed or omitted in violation of a law forbidding or commanding it and for which punishment is imposed upon conviction.
2. Unlawful activity:

According to the dictionary, yeah, they're crimes.
