Not much of Darwin's thinking has been superceded. It's true he didn't know about genetics or DNA, but he wrote extensively about the properties that the inheritable material had to have.

'Twas exactly my point; that Darwin's work is on the whole not "passed up", just details fleshed out. As opposed to other disciplines, where entirely new models were brought in wholesale.
