So what do you think that Darwin is trying to say here? Or are you just throwing out anything that you can find and hoping that something will be damning?

Yes, you are still stretching for things you can't reach. The quote shows that Darwin was not going to bully people into believing what he did, but would let them decide for themselves. How terrible!
