Harris showed her stuff

Harris Faulkner came into her own before a national audience during the brief return of "A Current Affair."

We already knew what a fine anchor she is from her time at atrociously managed KSTP-TV. On the national show, she was mostly a reporter but also the primary back-up anchor/host to Tim Green. In fact, she was the anchor who signed off the show Friday night. "It was his choice not to be there," she told me Monday.

"It didn't last long, but it was a fabulous time," she said. "I've never been on anything that was canceled. Local news doesn't get canceled." But, as we know, news anchors do.

"It's been a heartbreaker to see suddenly a newsroom full of people go, We're done, we've got to go find that next thing," Faulkner said. In her time there she had major pieces of the biggest stories of 2005: the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba and Hurricane Katrina.

After another "ACA" colleague landed an incredible interview with Joran Van Der Sloot, a prime person of interest in the missing persons case, Faulkner said she suggested that the show bring back Natalee's mom, Beth Holloway-Twitty. The Van Der Sloot interview, with him taking swipes at the grieving mother, ran on one day, and the next day Faulkner did a "Beth-unplugged" interview.

Faulkner's work on the Holloway case got her TV appearances with Larry King, Rita Cosby, Nancy Grace, Dan Abrams and Joe Scarborough.

Frustrated Volunteer Searchers Leave Aruba

Frustrated Volunteer Searchers Leave Aruba

Dave Holloway, father of missing Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, and a team of volunteer searchers have left the island of Aruba in frustration because of a lack of cooperation and support from Aruban authorities.

Beth Twitty, Natalee's mother, said all of the volunteers who were in Aruba left because there was "nothing left for the searchers to do." Twitty told Greta Van Susteren that the searchers needed extra equipment to complete their search that was available from the FBI, but Aruban officials first had to request the FBI's assistance.
Twitty said the FBI equipment was available and ready to go, but repeated attempts to get Aruban officials to request the assistance went unheeded.

"There is no sense in them just sitting around the hotel room doing nothing," Twitty said. She said it was not easy coordinating the volunteer searchers, because they have to take time from their jobs and their families.
Twitty to Return to Aruba

Twitty said she had tried to call Deputy Police Chief Gerold Dompig, who is leading the investigation into the disappearance of Natalee, and he would not return her calls. She called his office and his cell phone, she said.
"All they had to do was make the call... and they would not and have not done it," Twitty said.
Beth Twitty plans to return to Aruba today and met with Dompig as soon as possible.

I keep wondering what will happen when she arrives on aruba today. She might be served with some lawsuit papers, or even taken (into custody?) for questioning. The situation is getting downright acrimonious and overtly antagonistic.

I just can't stand the way any of the people involved with Aruba describe Beth. Natalee Holloway disappearance - "the perfect storm". How about the three criminals being described as the "perfect crime spree"??? " Beth has connections and frequently appears on news shows" - SO? We ALL want to know where Natalee was buried since we know WHO did it, then we DEMAND Justice. I agree that Aruba would have loved to dump this case in the waste basket within days. They make it sound like it's bad for a mother to arrive within 2 days of her daughter's "disappearance" looking to see what may have happened???? These people have NO respect for life that the bottome line. So another person goes missing - so what!! Just replace them with ANOTHER $$ spending tourist!! I think Aruba has gotten away with this kind of stuff for far too long.

You said it Survivor. I pray that Beth will be safe. I'm telling ya, if she was arrested I think it would be the biggest mistake of Aruba's life. They are already sitting on a powderkeg and aren't smart enough to see it.

NSNR, I told MAWG that if he didn't tie up the boat it would float away, didn't I? You're my witness.

Probe continues into mystery boat

MYSTERY BOAT: what the unusual craft found in the Buxton house looks like inflated and ready to be deployed.

THE Joint Services are continuing investigations into the discovery of a `Zodiac’ inflatable boat at a house in Buxton, East Coast Demerara on Saturday.

Troops in the continuing anti-crime operation came across the boat and a Police source yesterday said it appears that it belonged to criminals using the village as a safe haven.

The air boat was found in a house once occupied by Shaka Blair, who was killed in April, 2002 by Police who said he opened fire when presented with a warrant to search his house for arms.

According to the Police source, the house was seemingly occupied by criminals and the manner in which the boat was found along with two mattresses and a ladder, gave the impression that whoever occupied the building left in a hurry.

The boat, of the Zodiac brand, is designed to be extremely practical and effortless in fetching and can carry seven persons.

It is 4.2 m long, has a maximum payload of 800 kg and is designed to be used with engines of a range of between 15 to 50 hp.

Its features include a deep V-shaped Fibreglass hull, moulded non-slip deck, bow locker, a high volume self-bailer, Strongan Duotex removable tubes with semi-recessed valves and reinforced cone ends.

Sources said it is built to be used for `fast deployment’ and security officials are trying to determine who owned and used it from the Buxton base.

The Joint Services exercise in Buxton codenamed `Operation Stiletto’ involved patrols in the backlands, including the central navigation canals and the conservancy.

Criminal gangs, who had converted Buxton into a safe haven for about three years, had also exercised control over the backlands and waterways of the village.

No engine for the boat was found in the house and the troops in the exercise have not so far uncovered caches of guns and ammunition known to have been stashed in Buxton safe houses.

Joint Services spokesman, Mr John Sauers yesterday said `Operation Stiletto’ is continuing with mobile patrols from Annandale to Melanie Damishana.

The troops are also conducting “static” patrols at critical junctions in Buxton, he said.

The Joint Services launched `Operation Stiletto’ before dawn last week Monday to clean the village of criminal elements and illegal weapons and ammunition.

More Barfo Alert Stuff!

Until proven guilty

It was Aruba-bashing time again last night on American television, this time on NBC’s news network CNBC, by the host of The Big Idea and guests “Dog” the reality TV bounty hunter and his common-law wife. In connection with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway they spoke live with the mother and ended up calling for a boycott of Aruba, just as Dr. Phil had done on his programme before.

At no time, in either case, was an attempt made to “hear the other side of the story,” one of the basic principles of journalism and fair reporting. The reason this does not seem to bother the hosts, producers and editors involved is simple: Aruba is a foreign country that depends on US dollars for its survival and as such must simply find a way to punish someone, because an American is involved. It was even suggested that authorities had not cooperated with the FBI, while the Aruba government went out of its way to do so.

As tragic as Natalee’s disappearance is, there is a judicial system in the Dutch Kingdom that has served it well for centuries and with a tradition of fairness few will contest. Mistakes may have been made in parts of the Aruba investigation, but it is downright ludicrous to even suggest that a whole country or all its judicial authorities did not want to prosecute and convict someone for this terrible episode had there been any way to prove it.

We too have questions; for example, about the tape in which one of the suspects depicts the girl as not being “Miss Goody Two Shoes.” But the programme host’s remark that he should be slapped just for that is again indicative of the chauvinistic way of thinking involved. The tape could indicate they took advantage of the girl, but to prove even that “beyond a reasonable doubt” without physical evidence would be far from easy in any court of law in a civilised society, where even suspects have basic rights. The bounty hunter talked about the American system of “plea bargaining” which, to him, meant one of the three suspects would go free if he testified against the others. While Aruban law enforcement authorities undoubtedly tried to use the suspects against each other, as is common practice during questioning all over the world, the idea of allowing one who may be just as guilty of a crime as the others to go scot-free goes against what at least in the Dutch Kingdom is considered the principle of equal justice. Sure, deals are made, but the administration of justice must remain fair, indiscriminate and stand up to scrutiny in that sense at all times. After all, “Lady Justice” is blind for a reason.

That the suspects were only heard and not held as suspects right away as the last three seen with the girl is questionable and was a call made based on their backgrounds and a story they told about a security guard. On the other hand, if two innocent guards had not been arrested first based on that phoney story and had not talked to the other suspects in jail, the authorities might have known even less than they know now.

There’s no question about it, the fact that the boys involved lied more than once does not bode well for them. Without further evidence, however, there isn’t a judge or jury who would convict them of doing Natalee bodily harm. Just like in the US, in Aruba too people are innocent until proven guilty.

Haven't heard a thing today, but was in and out all day so I could have missed something. Maybe we will find out on evening shows if Beth made it to Aruba and what kind of "greeting" she got, if any. Hope that she arrived safely and didn't have a rude reception. She doesn't deserve punishment from them on top of her grief.
