"How much longer will parents shell out $100,000 for a college education for a son or daughter who ends up employed as a bartender, waitress or temp?"

as long as these doofie kids take psychology, sports science, sociology and philosophy. when parents force them to take business, premed or engineering then maybe these kids will move out of the basement and get a real career
Anyone who assumes that a loss of manufacturing jobs is automatically an indicator of a decline in manufacturing has a serious credibility problem.
How much longer will parents shell out $100,000 for a college education for a son or daughter who ends up employed as a bartender, waitress or temp?
This is an excellent point. I've said for a long time now that a substantial portion of today's college students are not really cut out for the rigors of higher education.
As long as they're willing to shuffle their kids off to college simply because it's the thing to do after high school, while at the same time paying no attention to this alarming trend.
Will we become "America, the land of opportunity for non-Americans, Americans need not apply"?
The fact of the matter is, there are still plenty of jobs available, the problem is that the variety of skills needed is insane.
I work in computers, mostly web programming. When I got out of college in 99, The job I have now paid close to 100k (as reported to me by people I work with who were here then).
Safe to say it doesn't pay that now.
Part of this has to do with the normal tugs and pulls of supply and demand, demand is lower while supply is higher, but part of it has to do with what is expected of the employee.
Granted, I can only speak to my sector of the computer industry, but right now, in order to be employed as a web developer you need to be an expert in XHTML, CSS, Javascript and XML, and you need to be proficient in either Java, .NET, C++, PHP or Perl, on top of that you need database skills.
Sufficed to say, i am studying for both my PMP and my SCJD.
That's a good question. It floors me that people are willing to place all blame college graduates and culture, but if anyone places even a minimum of blame on corporate greed, it automatically makes that person a socialist.
not much longer, its happening now. to be honest, a server at a good, busy restaurant can make alot of money. younger people are starting to see this, its not a bad career choice while you are still young.
""How much longer will parents shell out $100,000 for a college education for a son or daughter who ends up employed as a bartender, waitress or temp?"""
Myth: college grads are being offered statring salaries averaging close to $45,000 per year. 2005 will be the best year for college grads since 1999.
Get a government job. Can't beat the pay, job security, and those benefits and pensions the rest of us only dream of.
