House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.
"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.
At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.
"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.
Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.
Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

They don't know what they want. Many believe this country is no better than Nazi Germany and constantly remind us of it.
This is what you call an "exit strategy". ;)
It's funny how quick the "pragmatists" are to throw over DeLay. I thought it was only the "extremists" who do that.
Then you haven't followed the case very well. There were so many conflicts of interest and outright slanting of evidence that went on in that trial it's like we're living in a banana republic. Now obviously you're happy the woman's no longer with us so why can't you just move on with your life?
It is interesting, eh? :-]
DeLay has done/said nothing to apologize for.
Of course. When you're wrong, you're wrong. When you're right, you're wrong.
DeLay stepped in it the day he gave his denunciation of Michael Schiavo. While I have no respect or use for Michael Schiavo, DeLay's personalization and demonization of an American citizen was perceived as crossing a line.
A line he's now crawling backwards over.
No the inroads are being made because some people don't understand that lunatic rhetoric does not substitute for wisdom and careful articulation of their views.
The RATs have been losing of late precisely because their rhetoric has been dominated by far Left screwballs. The GOP will meet the same fate if its rhetoric is dominated by Right wing screwballs.
Silence and effective tactics have been the secret of Delay's success. Too bad he forgot the first in favor of babbling nonsense.
Those whom the Gods will destroy they first make mad.
Was it wrong to kill Terri Schiavo?: 82.5% Yes, 12.2% No.
Ah, yes...that refreshes my memory. But, remember, we're the extremists.
I'm afraid you're right. I said this on another thread: My country DIED with Terri.
Amazing, I'm going to bed, and will re-enter the real world tommrow.
Whew. "Overblown rhetoric", huh?
Like I said, hypocrisy... chainsaw.
Have a nice life.
We have to keep fighting, FRiend. It's not over yet.
The country I always knew and grew up in did. The best we can do is to make sure it never happens again.
Typical. There is nothing to be joyful about wrt TS's tragedy. However, I do understand that to pretend what she had was nothing but a semblence of life. NO ONE deserves such a fate. Society cannot pay millions to preserve all those in such conditions when there is NO hope they will return. It simply does not have the resources to spend.
I know people refuse to deal with this crass subject of money but the facts don't go away.
I think many would like to do the same, Canadian Outrage. A posting of DeLay's email addy would be helpful to many.
And did anyone catch Scarborough tonight in his personal thoughta section? The differences between what the dims have gotten away with lately (Sandy Burlar, and others relating to sale of arms to the Chinese, was in such STARK contrast to ANYTHING a respected, hard working PUBBIE has done, or would ever think to do.
The segment was powerful.
Judge Greer broke the law TWICE.
FIRST, he ruled against the Constitution and murdered an innocent woman, Terri Schiavo.
SECOND, he went against Congress, and did what he pleased.
Judge Greer should be IMPEACHED.
Thanks for continuing to prove my point.
Have fun dismantling the rule of law, hope you aren't angry when the left does it next time.
This is very disappointing, but I can only guess what vicious behind the scenes pressure must have been put on Tom. Maybe threats to his family. I wouldn't put it past the evildoers.
Take heart, Tom. You're the one beacon out there for a lot of us. Don't back down. This is one battle, not the whole war. You were on the right track before. Come out swinging even harder next time!
A BIG bump to that.
