House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.
"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.
At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.
"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.
Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.
Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

I swear, some of these folks want a theocracy, they almost deserve it.
Yes this is a huge blunder by Delay. He should have kept his mouth shut to begin with but after he didn't he should have NEVER apologized.
I have said all along this was a disaster for the GOP and now Delay is making it worse. While I support him a large number do not therefore making his the face of judicial reform has weakened our effort and may even defeat it.
For nothing.
INsanity more explains my major blunder.
cync can you post DeLay's email addy for me. Thanks a bunch. I want to email him and encourage him even from afar.
I seriesly doubt that will happen until they meet their Maker.
I missread. Saw "overblown rhetoric," as juxtaposed to this AP ("All Propoganda") *story*, and thought you meant ANTI Terri crowd. In light of what I have just stated, THAT would be *shocking*. /s.
And President Bush being called a RINO by someone (can't now remember, sorry) is OVER THE TOP and head-shaking./head-banging.
Bush understands what the Ultras don't. We have a margin of a couple of points NOT twenty. That margin will be disappated by wild rhetoric and fanatical positions. Particularly when those he was speaking for will desert the GOP at the drop of a hat.
With the blessing of the "Kangaroo" courts and the OUTRIGHT REFUSAL of Jeb Bush to step in and exert his Executive Authority!! Terri would have been better off to have been a brutal killer. Every "right" you can think of would have been afforded her.
DeLay is going to get Lott'd, if not worse. He shouldn't have back down an inch. I just lost respect for him.
I'm afraid this "apology" seals it, Greer is in the clear. He does whatever he wants at trial, tells Congress to stuff it, literally murders somebody yet DeLay is saying he's sorry. It's a world turned upside down.
Watch out for the incoming, you know, the perfect freepers, who are perfectly conservative, who speak perfectly, never make a mistake, always vote perfectly, for the perfect conservative pols, who then vote on the floor for perfect bills, have perfect judgement at all times, and have no room in their perfect world for human beings in DC.
And if your not perfect, pure, clean, with perfect timing, overboard you go.
Don't ever get in the foxhole with them, ever.
Will we face the same kind of abuse for pointing out that this was a loser for the GOP now that Delay has admitted we were right?
Not in THIS lifetime.
Right. This coming from somebody who sneered about "the Terri crowd" (post #16). You could cut the hypocrisy with a chainsaw.
I also didn't delight in the so called conservatives all of a sudden abandoning the rule of law
You're confused. Schiavo's murder had nothing to do with "the rule of law" and everything to do with the rule of some scumbag county probate judge and a bunch of other political whores who didn't have the guts to stand up and do the right thing. So now she's dead, and that's forever. Congratulations.
Delay must be protected but he cannot shoot his mouth off about impeaching judges when there is no cause. NO judge has done anything of which I have heard deserving of impeachment. Differences of opinion is NOT sufficient.
Wonder if Rush'll mention this one?
Fifteen years of fruitless attempts to return this woman to life was long enough. There was nothing there to save. She was gone.
It is that kind of hysteria which got Delay into this mess and which may cost the GOP a great leader. This is particular disturbing since Liberals hate him even more than Bush. His very existence was enough to drive them around the bend.
You evidently saw a sneer where there wasn't one, very defensive of you. As for the rule of law, you are a hypocrite, every single ruling went against what you wanted, so you wanted more rulings. Reminds me of the Gore supporters during the recount.
But, its the holier than thou crap and the hyperbolic "death cult" and "murderer" comments that make rational people ignore your kinds of posts as more rhetoric and name calling.
You want a theocracy? There are plenty out there, don't go advocating it here.
