House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.
"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.
At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.
"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.
Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.
Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

A brief moment of sanity?
DeLay should shut his mouth about impeaching judges. It's a loser.
And their just power from the consent of the governed, or so I had been led to believe.
where?
LOL.
DeLay knows that now. Now he just wants them to be "investigated," as a fall back. That of course won't happen either. ANd DeLay knows that too. It is just his inartful and inarticulate and unthoughtful exit strategy.
"Don't blink Tom.
That will only encourage your enemies."
For sure. When will the Republicans ever learn?
If you want to call DeLay and tell him that you support his fight against activist judges, his number is:
202-225-5951
Also call your Republican U.S. senators and congresspersons and tell them to SUPPORT DeLay. The Dems support the "evil doers," so the Republicans should support the good guys.
Terri/Tom DeLay ping! If anyone would like to be added to or removed from my Terri ping list, please let me know by FReepmail!
"Discuss" all you want. And if, as I suspect, you delighted in Schiavo's murder then I'm not surprised that others were using such invective. Not me, though - - I would simply figure there must be something wrong with you and tell you to have a nice life.
Zactly. Hope it starts soon or it will be over.
BTTT
LOL.
"Delay is a huge anchor on a dinghy."
Damn straight.
Yep.
Sheesssh Where are their backbones? Someone, somewhere has to have a backbone in 'em.
Maybe if you understood the Constitution you would understand why the judiciary is independent. For help you can read the Federalist papers 78-83 which deal with the concept.
Are the judges going to apologize for helping to kill Terri?
See what I mean? Any attempt at a rational discussion is met with this kind of hyperbolic nonsense from you. You are a disgrace to argument and persuasion. Is it any wonder that this has caused such a rift on FR?
We can argue the argument, not the poster if you like. I think Delay and lots of people on Terri's side lost a whole lot of credibility by saying stupid, extremist emotional words in this battle.
BTW, no, I didn't delight in Schiavo's "murder" I also didn't delight in the so called conservatives all of a sudden abandoning the rule of law that was so important to adhere to during the impeachment.
PLEASE don't apologize, sir. It was good to hear someone in my party speak the truth. I'd rather get rid of those who are knifing you in the back now.
We're screwed.
I agree. DeLay was RIGHT in the first instance. There is no need to backdown or back off PERIOD. In fact, they should be "dealing with" Greer NOW. IF Greer gets away with what he's done, then I don't see the Congress ever dealing with rogue judges. The time to start is RIGHT NOW!! If Tom D. got the support from the Republicans that he SHOULD get, there wouldn't be any need for these "explanations". I hope the people make a very concerted effort to rid the Republican party of RINO'S!!
