IT IS NOT surprising that dictatorial employers would fire workers for smoking even off the job (''Smoke screens," editorial, Feb. 20).

During the last 20 years punitive and regressive taxes have been imposed on tobacco. Smoking, which is legal in the United States, has been outlawed in private businesses, and institutionalized scorn has been directed at smokers.
I attended a meeting at the Harvard School of Public Health where Howard Koh, then health commissioner, said he had considered asking that every pack of cigarettes sold in Massachusetts bear the phrase, ''You are the scum of the earth."
Society has always found cause to scapegoat particular groups based on race, religious, or political ideolology. In this case, it's public health.

Per the Constitution, this is how I read it. That no taxes from one state can be demanded from another state.
The RICO law was shot down, but this Jenkins thingy still hangs out there. But I sure don't understand how anything can trump the Constitution. That is why so much of this is confusing.
Massachooches, commies HQ, More civil liberties taken, and that is why no one should ever be electred or posted to a high office from this cabal of Kennedy Voters.
Ops4 God BLess America!
#1 I wouldn't have to throw my cigs out the window if cars came WITH ashtrays!!! New cars have "change bowls" instead.
#2 In 35 years of driving all over the country never had one hit my car.
#3 If they didn't break down why aren't we swimming in the little butts? I mean during the entire last century people must have pitched a zillion butts on the ground, where are they???
#4 The soldier with the cig wouldn't be the same without it.IMHO its because a soldier with a smoke implies a man trying to calm himself with a soothing cigarette(what it does for a smoker in a high stress situation) after a terrible battle. It gives the soldier another demension of vulnerability that otherwise wouldn't be there. Another chapter to the story that picture tells. And I love to perpetuate stereotypes with this observation, but historically we associate strong manly men with smoking(i.e. marlboro man, soldiers, all of hollywoods leading men before the 80's, my daddy:)
#5 something is going to kill me, eventually. I'd rather die of emphyzema than MS or Diabetes or old age in a nursing home. I choose to check out a tad earlier. won't cost any more health care wise(and i have paid in my entire adult life too!!) and i'll suck less off social security!! Plus I'm paying more than my fair share of taxes. win win for all!!
Well-done!
What would the anti's prefer our soldiers do for relaxation? Drugs or alcohol??? I think smoking is the best way to go.
Well that sucker can just call me scum. It's better than being called a sucker.
I am not obtuse at all, I am an artist and I am looking at the photograph as a piece of art. You are looking a it as a having a smoke. Who is the simpleton here?
I do believe that the smoking soldiers last worry is dying from emphyzema in their 60's. As they escape a battle with their life by the skin of their teeth.
common sense is so rare anymore. why does smoking or not smoking have to be this big debate. All smokers i know are very curtious as far as making sure they never allow the smoke to go near a nonsmoker, they open windows, never smoke in someone elses house or car. restaraunts and other public places are usually so well ventillated that its a non issue. If a non smoker has to smell the hint of a cigarette shouldn't be a big deal. unless someone is blowing it right at you it shouldn't be a big deal. smokers are willing to compromise, non smokers should be too, cause i cannot see a time when a smoking america lays down and lets the whiners roll over them. Its happened too much as it is, but this will be the equivilant of our boston tea party!
Actually, no, it wouldn't.
Rush Limbaugh smokes cigars. Look where it got him.
Self-righteous anti-smoking health Nazis are the scum of the earth.
