Nathan Bedforf Forrest was no idiot and was indeed one of the most brilliant generals to ever draw breath. Forrest fought outnumbered and won against superbly equiped federal forces. He did more with fewer men than any general on either side as Robert E. Lee noted after the war.
The KKK of 1868 is not the KKK of today. In 1868 there was lawlessness in the South, white veterans could not vote, and black troops were out of control. The growth of underground societies was inevitable. As Jubal Early said in the wake of both elected Mississippi Senators being Black, "What a gentle institution slavery must have been to have so well prepared the Negro for the ballot box."
Forrest executed no troops at Fort Pillow and that reality lead to the dropping of any prosecution against him after the war. Forrest is the hero of my area and there are markers and monuments to him all over middle and west Tennessee.
