Why Republicans disgust me

Do you want to know why the Republican Party disgusts me?
Just take a look at the Pennsylvania Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Arlen Specter.
Specter is a disgusting old political hack who doesn't deserve to be dogcatcher of Bucks County. Yet, he has served four terms in the Senate.
He claims to be a Republican, but he supports few positions in the Republican platform. He is pro-abortion. He is pro-homosexual. He is a big spender. He is a big-government liberal by any standard you want to use.
Finally, this year, someone within the party decided to challenge Specter a young congressman named Pat Toomey.
Toomey, 42, didn't have much of an organization. He didn't have a lot of money. But he did have grass-roots support from conservatives people who actually believe in Republican Party principles, not just politicians who call themselves Republicans.
But the party establishment rushed to Specter's defense. Not only did President Bush weigh in to support the 74-year-old Specter, who is on the wrong side of nearly every issue under the sun, but so did the usually reliable junior senator from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum.
Despite the money advantages, the endorsements and the party establishment firmly behind him, Specter managed to squeak out a victory of less than 20,000 votes in a contest where more than 1 million were cast.
The Republican leadership's way of thinking about this race focuses on Specter being in line for the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee next year. But that should be reason for opposing him, not supporting him.
In 1987, Specter opposed President Reagan's appointment of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. He betrayed his own Republican president and a very good jurist. Why the Republican establishment would remain loyal to this unprincipled liberal is beyond me.

Dole was as un-electable as Kerry currently is.
And I VOTED for Dole. That dissapointment was primarily why I voted LP in the 2000 election.

Just...
Did you note the pics and endorsements by Bush for Specter??? They were there for all to see. Did you read that Bush demanded Toomey stop using any pictures of Bush in his campaign? That was there for all to see.
Such things do not happen in a vacuum.

The failure of the "conservatives" within the GOP, is obtaining sufficient votes from the people who cast them to win elections, but it's easier to always blame others for their failures than to accept fault.Yep. 60% of Republicans stayed at home. Likely there were more than a few conservatives among them.
How do the ideologues explain the lack of enthusiasm from these "conservatives"?

"didn't even have the courage to put a principled Conservative like Bob Dole in office in 1996"
The "Tax collector for the welfare state" was a conservative? News to me.

I voted for Dole as well, without holding my nose. It's the hairthin margin of victory Clinton got that should be noted. Dole was unelectable because "principled Conservatives" went with Perot.

If more people would get rid of their defeatist attitude toward other political parties such as the Constitution Party then these united States could get back on the correct track once again. Even as an Independent, I must decline that offer. The CP does not support school vouchers, therefore they are just as worthless as Democrats to me.
Besides, the CP does not have any foundation with which to advance their agenda. So they are like gerbils in the exercise wheel; moving fast, just not going anywhere.

JMO, time for you to go and urinate on his grave for not being a "real conservative".

Because I can read. Perhaps you should read this thread too. Look at normy's posts.

It's just a bit better than the alternative. I'm going to hold my nose, pull the Republican lever and continue to vote for the GOP conservatives in the primaries. I's be willing to bet that Pat Toomey will vote for Specter in November simply because even he will be better than Joe Hoeffel.

Good point, Luis. I hope we arent going to see a revival of the Im-not-voting-for-Bush-because-he-didnt-do-what-I-wanted-him-to-do crowd..Incoming!

Did you bother to check out their platform at all? The CP is against the WOT. Which is precisely why they'll never be able to reach out with even with mainstream voters on any side, if they wish to succeed. And that's just one issue.

Well there is one very tiny payback for Bush, I am one vote that he had last time, that will not be present in Nov. Republicans = Less Than Perfect Choice
Democrats = Much Worse Choice
So you intend to withold your vote from the Less Than Perfect Choice, giving an edge to the Much Worse Choice. Great Logic.
Just how bad was your public school?

Maybe the GOP should have found a candidate that held closer to conservative core value INSTEAD of someone so many people would have to "hold their nose" for.
Ever think of that?

Do you believe in anything? If it was Bill Clinton vs Joe Hoeffel, would you vote for Clinton?
No doubt you would have supported King George because he's better than King Louis.
To: mathluv
math...
A no vote for Bush is a vote for Kerry.
Now that is an original.
Let me tell you of another....OTB use to stand for "Off Track Betting"...After Bush the elder and Bush the younger it may well stand for "One Term Bush"....
Now, think about that as you and your fellow republicans go on ranting at and insulting conservatives. You are indeed doing your part to help ensure a Bush loss.

Bush and Santorum are part of the GOP, Bush is the head of the Party.
The Party is a coalition of diverse points of view, the "conservative" point of view is not the majority within the Party, the bulk of the mambership is closer to the center.
The second, and most important issue, is name recognition...Specter has a better-known name than Toomey, the political worth of incumbency is enormous.
By the way, Specter has been wining elections without Bush and Santorum for many years, why does he continue to win?
Because people vote for him.

Ya know what? Alec Baldwin says if his guy doesn't win he will move to another country. I expect far more from a conservative whos candidate lost. Do you not think controll of the Senate is important? Is Bush so liberal he and Hillary are basically the same person. If a President who is pro-life, pro-tax cuts, pro-gun, pro-self determination of America, anti-UN not conservative enough for you then I figure you can't be pleased. Is Bush everything we want? No neither was Reagan. If you want to threaten to stay home in hopes of defeating Bush so you can say " thats what you get for supporting Specter!" you are selfish. Bush is a conservative, Kerry is a Socialist as is the whole Dem. party.
You want to cut off the head to spite the face instead of taking your defeat and working for next election to get your guy elected. He won 49% of the vote on his first try. Reagan lost his first try and he just fought harder.
Bush would have supported Toomey if he would have won, probably alot. Now Specter owes Bush, alot.

am one vote that he had last time, that will not be present in Nov. Ok, so who are you going to vote for. JFnKerry? He will be sooooooo much better? Jeez, I'm not exactly happy with President Bush for some of the things he's done (Medicare, et al) but he is a far cry better on defense of this country - we are at war (or don't you remember that fact) - the economy is getting better, we have had tax cuts (albeit with some deficits - but according to Supply Side Econ - that will slowly be whittled away with increased spending - because people have more to spend - I know I have helped). Bush is the best candidate running and withholding your vote is just a crime.
That being said - do whatever you like, this is the "Land of the Free".
