CRAWFORD, Tex., Jan. 3 -- President Bush will propose protections for the Social Security taxes paid by the workers who would come into the country under massive changes to immigration laws he plans to announce on Wednesday, Republican officials said Saturday.
Bush's plan would make it possible for such workers from Mexico and perhaps other countries to collect retirement benefits without being penalized by their home countries for the years they spent working in the United States, the officials said.
Officials began releasing details of Bush's plan shortly before Christmas and provided new details over the weekend. The officials said Bush's plan will contain a new system to help workers who want to enter from Mexico or other countries if they have jobs waiting for them. It also includes a mechanism for some undocumented residents to continue working in the United States and get on a path to legal status.

I won't vote for Tancredo..when pressed, he conceded that a "worker program" could be an option. No thanks. I'll vote for anyone who will NOT give a worker program and deport the illegals already here.

But in my mind, the only way we will ever solve the immigration problems we have on our southern border is when the Mexican economy improves enough that it's no longer so attractive to come here and work. Exactly, but some on FR wish that Mexico would just go away. Is it going to be easy, hell no, but the US and Mexico have to talk and try to solve problems. Wishing that Mexico would just go away gets you nowhere.

Worried about your job? That's pretty short-sighted. Unemployment eventually begets more unemployment, when those unemployed people begin NOT buying the good or service you have to offer. So even if you aren't the one displaced by illegals taking your job for a fraction of the salary, it will catch up to you eventually. Unless you own a big corporation.

Your little soundbite sounds like something from Hillary.
LOL They stole that line from US. Corporations aren't evil, they're greedy.

But in my mind, the only way we will ever solve the immigration problems we have on our southern border is when the Mexican economy improves enough that it's no longer so attractive to come here and work.Same here --- I see no good reason for prosperity to completely end at the Mexican border. Immigration isn't helping the situation at all --- things are becoming more unstable as everyone is packing up their bags and no one is planning to stay, work, invest, retire --- they aren't fixing up their schools, they aren't improving their health care, they aren't doing much of anything but waiting for the monthly check to roll in from relatives working here.
I don't believe Fox has made any plans to improve the situation in Mexico, his only agenda seems to be to drastically increase how many come to the USA, and to demand more and more from the USA. I've never seen anything he's offered us in exchange, I've never seen him push through any reforms in that country.

I have never said there wasn't a problem, All I am saying is that with a border as vast as our is with Mexico. The idea that our border can be patrolled is laughable. Identification is one answer and jailing any employer who hires illegals is another. But try and get Congress to pass any kind of National ID card legislation and the same people screaming about this non existent proposal will have their knickers in a twist like never before

RE: Lets see what Bush's whole program is on illegals and SSN before we whine about news bites !
Reasonable -- but! Who's made the new definition of freedom of speech? That sounds like Dem rats. Though in your case I think you would allow the people to comment on the emerging story.

Administration officials
Don't make me laugh! I gave you links that aren't of the "Stepford Mentality" how you chose to view it is not my problem.
The only reason this is an "Internet" movement, is because Gore invented it (humor haha). Look do you follow nothing? It is on the news somewhere daily. It is in the papers daily. You cannot come in here and spout off at an issue you have not researched for your argument, that is silly.
Even a liberally biased CNN gives Lou Dobbs his show to cover this nightly, and intensely. Do you read your news? What country are you in? It's there , as are thousands of threads and posts here from reputable periodicals. Try it sometime and you may be better prepared in not being polished.

They didn't "take" our jobs away from us, they were GIVEN jobs most Americans don't want, by American employers.
Yes...they were GIVEN jobs American citizens needed. Less than 2% are picking your lettuce. Here in Vegas, friends are losing jobs in record numbers...behind the scenes, the jobs are being given to illegals. My neighbor Larry is a good example. He's a master carpenter...works on the Mandelay Bay Casino...or did. You have to be very good to be hired to work on the Casinos. He was replaced by an illegal...most of the construction is now being done by under the table illegal workers. So he bit the bullet and went to school to learn industrial welding. He took all of the exams and got his liscense. Now he's worried about losing that job because an illegal can go into the North end and buy a Welder's Liscense for $250! Jobs Americans won't do? Don't make me laugh!

Is it going to be easy, hell no, but the US and Mexico have to talk and try to solve problems. But that's not what we're seeing happening --- Fox isn't staying home working on problems. He needs to change the government over there, he needs to change it's laws. He's not doing any of that. He's just like some begger with his hands constantly out --- just trying to get rid of as many of his citizens as he can --- instead of finding some way that they could be needed building up their homeland.

Writing in a few thousands Tom Tancredo's is going to hurt you how?
I live in Tancredo's district. Why preach to the choir? He stands where I stand and maybe you. It's our moderate FOS senators that count.

Same here --- I see no good reason for prosperity to completely end at the Mexican border. Ignoring them isn't the answer either. It's too bad that Mexico can't follow Chile's example. Chile is the only Latin American economy that isn't a basket case.

Corporate profits are up. Jobs are not. That was my only point. I don't think corporations are evil. I think it's good that the stock market is up. When businesses profit, jobs get created -- generally speaking. It's just that the latest economic upswing has not resulted in a change in the job market.
