What a difference a decade makes! When it was first reported in May 2004 that Saddam-era chemical weapons shells had injured U.S. troops, the editors of the New York Times dismissed that, “Finding some residual weapons that had escaped a large-scale destruction program would be no great surprise and if the chemicals had degraded, no major threat.” Now, a major New York Times report on the issue has been followed by an editorial warning of “A Deadly Legacy in Iraq”: some 5,000 chemical shells have been discovered over the years in Iraq by U.S. or U.S.-trained Iraqi forces. Many more...
  • Boko Haram, Nigeria Government Agree to Cease-fire

Islamist militant group Boko Haram and the Nigerian government have agreed to a cease-fire. Nigerian Chief of Defense Staff Alex Badeh issued an order Friday, telling all service chiefs "to comply with the cease-fire agreement between Nigeria and Boko Haram in all theaters of operations." The text went out after Danladi Ahmadu, who calls himself the secretary-general of Boko Haram, told VOA that a cease-fire agreement had been reached.

  • Bush Didn’t Lie: But why did his administration sit on the evidence of Saddam Hussein’s WMDs?

New media accounts — including coverage by NRO’s Patrick Brennan — confirm what I repeatedly have written since the depths of Operation Iraqi Freedom: The late dictator Saddam Hussein did have weapons of mass death, and the United States of America was correct to invade Iraq, find these toxins, and destroy them. Also vital: padlocking this Baathist general store for militant-Islamic terrorism. As I explained on July 17, 2006: While the liberal press gently sleeps, evidence continues to mount that Hussein had WMDs, though perhaps not in quantities that would bulge warehouses. “Since 2003 Coalition forces have recovered approximately...
  • Joining Islamic State is about ‘sex and aggression,’ not religion

It is easy to look to religion for an explanation of why young men — and some women — become radicalized. But it is psychology, not theology, that offers the best tools for understanding radicalization — and how best to undo it. The appeal of Islamic State rests on individuals’ quest for what psychologists call “personal significance,” which the militant group’s extremist propaganda cleverly exploits. The quest for significance is the desire to matter, to be respected, to be somebody in one’s own eyes and in the eyes of others. Extremist ideology is effective in such circumstances because it offers...
  • Kobani Key to U.S. Strategy Against Islamic State

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Dusty and remote, the Syrian city of Kobani has become an unlikely spoil in the war against Islamic State militants - and far more of a strategic prize than the United States wants to admit. Perched on Turkey's border, the city of about 60,000 has been besieged for weeks by IS fighters. Kobani is now a ghost town: the U.N. estimates that fewer than 700 of its residents remain as its people flee to safety in Turkey. The Obama administration has declared Kobani a humanitarian disaster, but not a factor in the overall strategy to defeat the...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. government agencies are investigating claims that an American fighting with the Islamic State militant group died recently in the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani. U.S. officials said law enforcement and intelligence agencies were trying to confirm Internet postings by Islamic State militants which last weekend reported the "martyrdom" of a fighter known as Abu Muhammad al-Amriki. The nom-de-guerre indicated that the man considered himself an American. In a video posted on YouTube in February, a bearded man believed by U.S. authorities to be the same individual is seen speaking English with a heavy foreign accent....

United State government said that it has met directly with a main Kurdish political party in Syria for first time since the Syrian crisis began more than three years ago. The State Department has revealed that in the past week US officials in French Capital Paris have held talks with the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, known as the PYD. This is the first time US government has met with PYD, which has been linked to Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK), a guerrilla group considered by the U.S. and Turkey as a terrorist organization. The reports of US meeting PYD official is...

Anti-Israel British MP George Galloway will not be prosecuted over remarks in a speech during which he declared that his constituency, Bradford, was “an Israel-free zone”, reports Jewish News Online. The comments, made by the Bradford West MP in August, caused an outcry on social media and complaints were made to West Yorkshire Police. On Wednesday, the force said the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) did not believe there was sufficient evidence to support charges but also said it had logged it as a “hate incident”. …

Sinn Féin party leader Gerry Adams denied new accusations Thursday that he concealed child-abuse crimes within his own secretive movement, this time allegedly committed by a Belfast officer of the outlawed Irish Republican Army. Mairia Cahill, a member of one of Belfast’s top IRA families, appeared alongside a former foreign minister outside Ireland’s parliament to accuse Adams of conspiring to suppress her reports of being raped by an IRA commander from Adams’ home district in 1997, when she was 16. …
  • The Official Name For The War On ISIS Was Rejected 2 Weeks Ago

"It's just kind of bleh," an unnamed military officer told The Journal. An unnamed senior official further said the name was merely a placeholder that had never been considered to be the actual name for the overall operation. The initial failure of the name of the operation was multifaceted. For some officers, Inherent Resolve failed to evoke the sense of the Middle East. Other officers rejected the name on the grounds that it failed to capture the sense of the international coalition that had joined the US in operations. Military operations have been named by the US military since at...

Despite years of diplomacy and a CIA operation to vet and train moderate rebels, the U.S. finds itself without a credible partner on the ground in Syria as it bombs the Islamic State group. That's a potentially serious flaw in its strategy to ultimately defeat the militants. The U.S. strategy to crush IS rests on the use of local proxy forces, and hinges on plans to use $500 million and a base in Saudi Arabia to build an army of moderate Syrian rebels. The ground force component has always been seen as a challenge in Syria, but the difficulty has...

WASHINGTON — The Defense Department has come up with a name for the American military strikes against the Islamic State: Operation Inherent Resolve. For two months, Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon’s press secretary, has been batting down queries from reporters about the refusal to name the operation. After all, the reasoning went, the military loves naming operations: Desert Shield (Kuwait); Desert Storm (Iraq, the first time); Iraqi Freedom (Iraq, the second time). So at long last, there is now a name for Iraq (the third time) and Syria, announced on Wednesday by the United States Central Command in a...

The Islamic State (IS) militant group has been driven out of most of the northern Syrian town of Kobane, a Kurdish commander has told the BBC. Baharin Kandal said IS fighters had retreated from all areas, except for two pockets of resistance in the east. US-led air strikes have helped push back the militants, with another 14 conducted over the past 24 hours. ... Speaking by phone, Kurdish commander Baharin Kandal told the BBC's Kasra Naji that she hoped the city would be "liberated soon". Ms Kandal said her militia group had been receiving arms, supplies and fighters but she...

Early this year, Islamic State forces showed a powerful new side to their murderous military operation by knocking out five of the Iraq Army’s M1A1 Abrams tanks with anti-tank guided missiles and shooting down six of the army’s helicopters with a light anti-aircraft gun and rocket launchers while damaging 60 others. The New York Times quoted a U.S. official in June as saying that, in all, 28 Iraqi Army Abrams tanks had been damaged in fighting with the militants, including the five that suffered “ full armor penetration” when struck by the anti-tank missiles. As for the helicopters either destroyed...

After an 800-man brawl outside a mosque in Hamburg on Tuesday German police deployed 1,300 officers on Wednesday night, but were still unable to separate warring Islamic fundamentalists and Yazidi Kurds in violence which again led to a hospitalisation for the third night running, reports theLocal.de. Gangs have been taking to the streets of Germany for much of this week, as “peaceful” protests by Yazidi Kurds were attacked by “ISIS terrorist Militias” of Salafist Muslims armed with broken bottles, machetes, and in some cases even firearms. The violence echoes that of the ISIS conflict in Syria and Iraq, and the...

The radical Islamist militants now reportedly control only 20% of the border town, as opposed to about 40% before The Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) has suffered setbacks and has begun retreating from parts of the Syrian border town of Kobani, according to a local official, who said Kurdish forces were advancing against the militant group. Idris Nassan told the BBC that ISIS had previously controlled almost half the town but currently occupies “less than 20%.” The retreat comes after the U.S. stepped up the intensity of air strikes in the region, with al-Jazeera quoting U.S. officials...

The self-declared Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has shocked the world with its brutality. The British Prime Minister David Cameron, along with other Western leaders, claims that the Islamic State has “nothing to do with the great religion of Islam, a religion of peace.” The former British PM Tony Blair states that IS’ ideology is “based in a complete perversion of the proper faith of Islam.”
