The Islamic State (IS) militant group has been driven out of most of the northern Syrian town of Kobane, a Kurdish commander has told the BBC.

Baharin Kandal said IS fighters had retreated from all areas, except for two pockets of resistance in the east.

US-led air strikes have helped push back the militants, with another 14 conducted over the past 24 hours.

...

Speaking by phone, Kurdish commander Baharin Kandal told the BBC's Kasra Naji that she hoped the city would be "liberated soon".

Ms Kandal said her militia group had been receiving arms, supplies and fighters but she refused to say how, reports our correspondent, who is on the Turkish border near Kobane.

...

A Kurdish official in Kobane, Idris Nassen, confirmed to Agence France-Presse that IS had pulled back from some areas and that "the international coalition has fought IS more effectively during the last few days".

But he warned: "We need more air strikes, as well as weaponry and ammunition to fight them on the ground."

Obama could not let Kobane fall to ISIS before the elections. The images on the news wouldn’t go over so well.

After the elections, my guess is that he won’t give a flip again. We all knew Mosul and other places were being slaughtered by ISIS. I realize Obama doesn’t attend most of his security briefings but my guess is he probable at least heard what was happening.

Obama won’t care after the elections. He is that sleazy.

I believe ISIS will try again since this has been so prominent in the media.

You folks are not the sharpest knives in the drawer!!! Syria’s town of Kobane was never a “real” ISIS target. It was a well planned distraction to take the eyes and attention of Obama and company off the “real” prizes, the Bagdad International Airport and then Bagdad, itself. As soon as Obama, the buffoon, reacts to the ISIS Bagdad campaign and switches bombing to Anwar Province...ISIS will move in force, and destroy the Kurdiah town of Kobane!!! Obama is totally braindead!!!

"I believe ISIS will try again since this has been so prominent in the media."

That Pentagon dude said they were continuing to send reinforcements which were continuing to be targets. ISIS is very concerned about losing Kobani IMHO.

You may be right. But the question remains: Why did they go after another "quick" victory in Syria's Kobani after suffering major loses by the Iraqi Kurds? I believe to save face and keep the international fighters coming in.

.
Kurdish woman commander fighting ISIS, effectively.

Awesome.

While the American-trained Iraqi army has not put up a significant fight against these monsters.

Yet, we are unwilling to provide heavy weapons to the Kurds.

What gives?

This has been a distraction. Baghdad is the real prize.

ISIS has grand plans that include taking Syria & Iraq totally under their control. Then will they move onto Jordan & take that country!!! My guess is they are hoping for three major existing states in the Middle East, Eygpt, Iran and themselves!!! And....I firmly believe Obama is totally with them!!! Goal...destroy Israel in alignment with Iran!!! Obama will do nothing...but Israel will do what Obama won’t....nuke Iran and ISIS destroying major population centers just as we did to Hitler’s Germany and Tojo’s Japan!!! Obama is not a player at all!!! If they survive..whatever...then they will come for the USA which at that point will be defenseles, as caused and planned by Obama!!!
