One team has demonstrated that DNA they encapsulated can preserve information for at least 2,000 years, and they're now working on a filing system to make it easier to navigate. ... "A little after the discovery of the double helix architecture of DNA, people figured out that the coding language of nature is very similar to the binary language we use in computers," says Grass, who is with ETH Zurich. "On a hard drive, we use 0s and 1s to represent data, and in DNA, we have four nucleotides A, C, T and G." But DNA has two major advantages...

Complaints have been made over the influx of topless women prancing around Times Square and charging tourists to be in photos, deeming it inappropriate and offensive. The women, who cover their bodies in paint and and typically wear nothing but a thong, are not in trouble for being topless - which is legal in New York City - but for posing with underage children. The number of women at the tourist mecca have doubled in the last year, with about 40 walking around Times Square on the weekends, according to The New York Daily News.

There is something fishy about this swarm of birds Is Big Brother Vladimir Putin watching us from above? We've seen the Russian president shirtless on a horse, calmly stroking a leopard and flooring a Judo black belt. Has Russia's king of masculine poses found a way to get a swarm of flying birds to soar into a formation of his face?

One man's rations is another's racism. That's what a Manhattan pizzeria named Pizza by Certé discovered when passersby noticed the sign for a summertime specialty — and promptly uploaded a snapshot of the same to Instagram. The sign advertised a pizza slice with the curious name “Pic-a-nika” and even more curious toppings, among them Southern-fried chicken and watermelon. The owner of the restaurant maintains that the name of the creation comes from the lilting manner in which his father, who emigrated here from Italy, pronounces the word picnic. And what foods are more common picnic fare than fried chicken and...

Minnesotans are putting a tidal wave of imagination into their pontoons — from luxe water slides to pirate planks. “Pontoons Gone Wild.” “Pontoon Hunters.” “Pimp My Pontoon.” If a TV producer stumbled on the gems floating on our lakes, there’d be a reality show waiting. These aren’t the kitschy putt-putters with plastic chairs and artificial turf, either. Pontoons, while still floating platforms, are larger, more powerful, more luxurious and sometimes even outrageous. “The pontoon used to be grandpa and grandma’s boat,” said Brent Wiczek, manager of Nisswa Marine. “We’re selling pontoons to a much younger generation than we ever have....

Pretty much ever since 2013/2014, we have been watching Juan Williams on Fox News gloat and predict how well Hillary will perform as the leading Democrat candidate, and at the same time the other four hosts on "The Five" just sat there are proved him wrong. For the last two or so years Juan has been bragging on how Hillary is way ahead of all GOP contenders, really? And who declared Juan to be God? Juan always has to come across as the smartest on on the Five, always interrupting the hosts on The Five when he thought they were...

Earlier this year, Bill Gates posted a video of himself drinking water that was made from human feces. (It went viral, unsurprisingly.) The water was processed by a machine that collects human waste and converts it into safe, reusable byproducts -- water, electricity and ash. This week, Gates said in a blog post that the "Omni Processor" machine is getting its first test run in Dakar, Senegal, with the aim of reducing disease and saving lives in the city. ... The Omni Processor makes much of the current waste management process obsolete, potentially making sanitation much cheaper for Dakar. And...

Winner in the Scary Cow Film Festival! Before she passed away, my Great-Grandmama recorded a cassette tape of a story she said must be told. I found the tape, had it translated from Geshemshaskcili, and using photos from our family archives assembled it into this movie. Some of the photos are from current family, but others are original. People who know my clan might notice some family resemblances. This is a delightfully twisted fairy tale of coming to America. . .

Be it to the ocean, rivers, or reservoirs, North Koreans are heading out to catch fish not only with fishing poles but an array of creative tools in order to earn some extra money, Daily NK has learned. Using a fishing rod or nets are of course the most basic of methods, but more extreme measures are also being employed such as electrocuting fish with the help of generators or even blowing them up with grenades and gunpowder, according to Daily NK’s local sources. “Even though it’s so hot right now, people are out day and night fishing,” a source...

Popular Science (8/11, Fecht) reports that on July 29, the Rosetta spacecraft was able to capture what the ESA called a “dramatic outburst” from Comet 67P, which was strong enough to affect the solar wind. The article notes that the ESA said that “unpredictable outbursts” like this one are occurring more frequently as the comet reaches perihelion, or its closest point to the sun in its orbit, on August 13.
