The National Weather Service is warning that the storm hitting Southern California on Sunday could be the strongest since 2010, prompting at least two cities in burn-scarred areas to issue evacuation notices in advance of heavy rain, flooding and possible mudslides. Light rain was falling across the region Sunday morning, with more intense rain expected as the day progresses. The heaviest rain was expected Sunday afternoon and evening.

  • The forecast won’t budge — rain seems inevitable for Trump’s inauguration

The forecast has become more certain that Friday is going to be cloudy, damp and cool for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony and the subsequent parade. Given the crowds and tight security at the event, we’re recommending raincoats and ponchos instead of umbrellas — even for the nonticketed areas. If you’re heading downtown Friday, expect temperatures to be in the 40s. The high looks like it will be in the upper 40s — maybe 50 degrees on the nose — but that’s not going to feel warm with showers and gray, cloudy skies. Dress warmly with a waterproof outer layer,...

Global warming is going to steal away some of those postcard-perfect weather days in the future, according to a first-of-its-kind projection of nice weather. On average, Earth will have 10 fewer days of mild and mostly dry weather by the end of the century, the researchers estimate. Some places will get more days perfect for picnics or outdoor weddings, while other places will lose a lot. Rio de Janeiro, Miami and much of Africa are big losers, while Europe and Seattle will gain nicer weather. “It’s the type of weather where you can go outside and do something fun,” said...
  • Oslo to temporarily ban diesel vehicles

Beginning on Tuesday, diesel vehicles will be banned from driving on Oslo streets because of acute levels of dangerous air pollution. On both Monday and Tuesday, weather forecasts call for cold weather and very little wind, conditions likely to cause high levels of exhaust pollution over large areas of the city. Therefore the City of Oslo will for the first time ever implement a ban on diesel vehicles on municipal roads. On Tuesday, the ban will be in effect from 6am to 10pm. It will remain in effect during those same hours for as long as air pollution levels are...

Scientists say treated wastewater could help Virginia’s coast respond to rising seas. A local sanitation department for the Hampton Roads region wants to start injecting the water deep underground instead of dumping it in rivers that flow into the Chesapeake Bay. The U.S. Geological Survey says the water could likely expand the sandy aquifer underground, causing the ground to rise. …

CHRISTIANS around the globe are linking recent astronomical phenomenon to the end of the world - which they believe could happen this week. The evening of January 12 will see the first full moon of the year, known as the Wolf Moon, and Venus will be at its brightest for the first time in eight year. This, combined with the fact that they fall on the eve of the first Friday the 13th of the year, has led some to believe that the end is nigh. While separately the three incidents are nothing new, with a full moon every month, Venus...

A spectacular and beautiful cloud formation was spotted in the skies above Australia by a passenger on an aeroplane. Ilya Katsman, 22, saw the phenomenon on a Virgin Australia flight from Perth to Adelaide. A spokesperson from the Met office explained to The Telegraph that the cloud is of a type commonly seen in Australian skies, but they are rarely as beautifully distinctive as this example.

A US property firm linked to Irish TV celebrity and political activist Eddie Hobbs has been accused of leaving poor African American tenants in its West Detroit properties with no heat in the freezing Midwestern winter. Thirty-five percent of Detroit residents live in poverty while 57 percent of the city’s children do, among the highest rates in the country. The company, Artesian Equities, is a subsidiary of Brendan Investment Pan European Property (BIPAP) of which Hobbs was a co-founder and served as a non-executive director before resigning in 2015 to co-found the right-of-center political Renua Party. He retained a 4.5%...

Blizzards and dangerously low temperatures persisted in parts of Europe on Sunday, prompting Pope Francis to draw attention to the homeless suffering in freezing weather. In Serbia, aid workers scrambled to help hundreds of migrants sleeping rough in parks and makeshift shelters. The extreme winter weather that has gripped Europe in the past days has caused more than a dozen deaths, left villages cut off, caused power and water outages, frozen rivers and lakes, grounded flights and led to road accidents. Serbia’s authorities on Sunday banned river traffic on its stretch of the Danube — one of Europe’s main rivers...

The country experienced its coldest winter night on Thursday as the mercury dropped to –26°C in some places — the coldest it has been in the 2016-17 season. Thursday night was the coldest so far this winter, with temperatures in parts of Thuringia and atop Germany’s highest mountain dropping to below –26°C. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported that southern Germany between Franconian Switzerland and Upper Palatinate in Bavaria were particularly affected by below-freezing temperatures. In Schorndorf-Knöbling, the thermometers were still reading around –22.6°C by 9am on Friday morning. …

In the last few days, leading up to Snowmageddon 2017, I was warned many times that a devastating snowstorm was headed to Atlana, GA. The weatherdroids were all very upset (and yet somehow excited), and Governor Deal declared a State Emergency over it. From the photos I will share, below, you will see why. When I woke up and went outside, I was greeted by towering snow drifts like this. There is absolutely no way I would be able to step over these monsterous drifts and get out my front door. Time to try getting out the back patio. The...

Did an intense fire on board R.M.S. Titanic lead to one of the worst disaster's in maritime history? A new documentary by author and journalist Senan Molony suggests the emergence of pictures hidden in a forgotten album for a century prove that the supposedly unsinkable passenger ship was weakened by a smoldering coal fire even before it left on its catastrophic maiden voyage. Titanic, which at the time of its sinking in 1912 was the biggest ship afloat, hit an iceberg in the north Atlantic on the night of April 14 and went down with the loss of about 1,500...

For the first time in 40 years, snow has fallen on the Sahara Desert, the Independent reported Wednesday. […] “In his images [Karim Bouchetat, an amateur photographer who captured images of the snow on Monday], a thin layer of snow rests on deep orange dunes, where he said it stayed for about a day, and forms whirling patterns where the slopes are too steep for it to settle. Snow was reportedly last seen in Ain Sefra in 1979, when a half-hour snowstorm stopped traffic,” the Independent stated in its article. …
