Just a glimpse of what is turning out to be a good year in Northern California weather from the top of Donner Pass at 7300ft elevation.

This is the kind of weather that doomed the Donner Party.
Snowfall likely to be close to eight feet.
... and not too far away, Death Valley.
Years ago, I drove the pass in a rental 4WD Explorer. The highway patrol limited traffic to cars and trucks with chains or 4WD vehicles.
It was snowing lightly when I made the trip down into California. Sun was shining when I arrived.
The weather predictors have been promising us this. With their track record, we’ll have to wait and see. Hoping for some spill over into western NV. Not 5 ft but at least a little.
and not too far away, Death Valley.
And in the middle of Death Valley, one or the largest underground aquifers in the US.
Nature is diverse.
Obama’s EPA director predicted no snow on the Sierra’s at all by now.
Happy Trump Year
His definition of snow and mine are different.
Great Heavenly skiing!
About 40 years ago we had to quit in the early afternoon due to whiteout conditions, and went back to our lodge across from the Gunbarrel parking lot. Woke up to three feet of new snow, and since the lifts were operating, but the roads were closed, we had the morning to ourselves, carving into virgin snow on every run! Spectacular but tiring in the heavy stuff.
Fond memories of living at Serene Lakes and working at Sugar Bowl in the early 80’s. The late March ‘82 storm was epic.
Reno forecast shows 5 days of light snow starting Wednesday.
1-3 inches each day. That could add up in that hilly environment.
Yes, they blew the last three big storm predictions for Reno. My knee and my Indian weather rock have a better record.
I drove through that pass one winter in the late 80s and the snow was easily 15-18ft deep.
The road was like an ice tunnel through the mountains.
Sierra Cement...
Careful what you wish for.
A snowy Reno is not easy to get around in, even with 4wd and/or chains.
Cars sliding through stop lights and down every hill. Abandoned cars in the middle of the road are not unusual.
Some cement is not that heavy.
Perhaps the Democratic Party should be renamed the Donner Party. They seem intent on eating their own.
I noticed that phenomenon while on a ski trip to Utah. While the requirement was never in effect, there was a sign at the mountain rd. junction which explained what you had to do when the warning was in effect. There was even a parking lot just down road a bit which was used to put your chains on.
Remember decades ago when studded snow tires were the norm?
