Many of the minimum wage laws passed in recent years, including in major cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, include waivers allowing unionized businesses to pay their employees below the minimum. The waivers in effect make unionizing workers a low-cost option for businesses unwilling or unable to pay the new minimum wage, which in cities such as San Francisco and SeaTac, Wash., which also has a waiver, will climb as high as $15 an hour when fully phased in. In those cities, businesses can sign a collective bargaining agreement with a union that sets the wages below...

The fissure was first spotted in October on Rattlesnake Ridge in south central Washington State, overlooking Interstate 82 and the Yakima River. Since then, a 20-acre chunk of mountainside — roughly four million cubic yards of rock, enough to fill 25 football stadiums to the top of the bleachers, eight stories up — has been sliding downhill. Geologists can measure its current speed — about two and a half inches a day — but they cannot say for certain when, or if, it might accelerate into a catastrophe. And they are powerless to stop it. “The mountain is moving, and...

President Donald J. Trump is set to deliver the State of the Union on January 30. To no one’s surprise, a few Democrats will be boycotting the event. Well, five total—all the typical loudmouths of the Democratic Party.1. Frederica Wilson (D-FL)2. Maxine Waters (D-CA)3. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.)4. John Lewis (D-GA)5. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR)Lewis thinks Trump is a racist after the “s**thole countries remark”: Lewis, 77, said he cannot go forward with attending the address to Congress, after what President Donald Trump "has said about so many Americans... I wouldn't be honest with myself."He also told NBC News he believes...

A prominent donor to the Democratic Party says she is considering withdrawing support for senators who urged their colleague Al Franken to resign after he was accused of sexual misconduct. The donor, Susie Tompkins Buell, has been one of the Democratic Party’s most generous supporters for decades. In particular, she has been a champion of female politicians, including Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Maria Cantwell of Washington. Last month, those senators were among the dozens who called for Franken to resign from the Senate after at least six women accused him of sexual harassment...

An 18th-century stone home along the Hudson river - reputed to have been the temporary office of first President George Washington - has sold for the full asking price of $1.6 million. The house in Snedens Landing, NY, was used by Washington when his soldiers were guarding ferries around the Palisades cliffs from British troops. It was more recently lived in for 60 years by landscape designed and photographer Judy Tomkins, who died aged 90 last year. The 2,400-square-foot property was originally built in the 1780s, and sits on nearly 1 acre of beautifully landscaped surroundings.

Today is the anniversary of a day all but forgotten. On this day , Dec 23 1783 , Washington resigned his commission. It would be as if Alexander the Great simply walked from his empire after having won everything. "They wanted me to be another Washington," said the defeated Napoleon. King George III of England said "If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.". To find a similar example one has to go all the way to 458 BC. Lucius Quintus Cincinnati after his victory as Rome’s emergency dictator simply went back to his farm. As Good as...

It is probably the most important date in United States history, but to most people Dec. 23 signifies only that there are two shopping days left until Christmas. After victoriously leading an army for more than eight years against the mightiest military force on the planet, Gen. George Washington walked before the Continental Congress and announced, “Having now finished the work assigned me, I retire from the great theater of action …”

Olympia, WA - An Evergreen State College professor who was captured on video making racist remarks and screaming at her white colleagues has resigned, and accepted a settlement from the school. There has been a slight hitch in the academic career of Naima Lowe: The Evergreen State College professor who was caught on camera screaming at her white colleagues has elected to resign, according to an internal announcement. Provost Jennifer praised Lowe for teaching “feminist and queer theory, race, and decolonial studies” — i.e., pernicious cultural Marxist B.S. with no redeeming social value. Lowe, a self-described “black queer artist” who taught art and filmmaking classes at Evergreen State, initially came under public scrutiny after she was filmed screaming at two white members of the school’s Equity Council in the wake of...

A household appliance will be the next stepping stone on America’s path to restored greatness. The government is poised to punish many Americans, in the name of protecting a few of them, because, in the government’s opinion, too many of them are choosing to buy foreign-made washing machines for no better reason than that the buyers think they are better. If you are wondering why the government is squandering its dwindling prestige by having opinions about such things, you have not been paying attention to Whirlpool’s demonstration that it is more adept at manipulating Washington than it is at making washing machines.

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement:“Despite the pleas of millions of Americans, President Trump’s FCC voted to change the internet as we know it, and turn it into yet another money-making tool for large corporations. This move is shameful and wrong, and I encourage the many, many people affected by today’s decision—from students and families, to small business owners and the next generation of innovators—to keep fighting back. We will not forget who and what comes first in the Trump/Republican agenda.”
