But since the tax took effect, those costs have only risen as gun violence in the city has surged. And the tax has apparently brought in much less than city leaders projected it would. “How much data do you need?” asked Dave Workman, senior editor of TheGunMag.com and member of the Second Amendment Foundation. “The data says the law has failed to prevent what they promised it would prevent.” [Snip] Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess introduced the tax in 2015. It puts a $25 tax on every firearm sold in the city and up to 5 cents per round of...

VETERANS: At Oversight Hearing, Sen. Murray Urges VA Secretary to Reject Trump Administration’s Efforts to Move VA Toward Privatization While VA works on a long-term plan to reduce wait times and improve veteran care, the Trump Administration is pushing provisions that would weaken the entire VA systemSen. Murray: “These moves show a disturbing trend toward downsizing and dismantling this VA, rather than strengthening the system to better serve millions of veterans in communities in Washington state and across the country” (Washington, D.C.) – Today in a Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, Sen. The World Socialist Web Site, a hard-left news outlet which promotes “revolutionary opposition to the capitalist market system” has published a scathing editorial denouncing the student protesters at Evergreen State College as race-baiting loons who fail address any actual issues affecting “working class people of all races and genders.” Over the past couple weeks, the Evergreen State campus in Olympia, Washington has been the site of a stream of high-profile protests led largely by radical black students. The protesters have centered much of their fury on Bret Weinstein, a white biology professor who criticized an organized event “inviting” every white...

The Seattle City Council on Monday approved a new tax on soda and other sugary beverages as way to raise millions for healthy food and education programs. The ordinance calls for a tax of 1.75 cents per ounce to be paid by distributors of beverages such as Pepsi and Coke, sports drinks, energy drinks and other sweetened drinks. The tax excludes diet drinks. Supporters such as public health advocates and community groups cheered after the measure passed on a 7-1 vote. Mayor Ed Murray proposed the idea in February to raise millions for programs that promote access to healthy food...

If Tumblr kids did the French Revolution, it would be exactly like Evergreen State College. The campus erupted in protest a two weeks ago when biology professor Bret Weinstein emailed a student criticizing their plans for the “Day of Absence.” Usually the event is conducted by students of color leaving the campus for the day, but this year they wanted to coerce all white students and faculty to leave instead. Weinstein called this an act of oppression of its own, and was pilloried by hundreds of students who in effect took over the campus in Olympia, Washington.

Can we just get along? This question is being asked more and more, what with the bitter polarization of the nation. The answer, right now, would appear to be a resounding no. It’s not because we can’t. We don’t want to. I had that thought the other day when I was listening to the Seattle City Council. Many council meetings of late involve left-wingers shouting at other left-wingers for not being left-wing enough. But on this day, a new purity test of left-wingedness was revealed.

Murray: Reneging on global goals to combat climate change puts Washington state families’ health and safety at risk and hurts the American economy Backing out of international climate agreement subverts U.S. credibility and influence on the world stage (Washington, D.C.) – Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement that he will withdraw the United States from the international Paris Climate Agreement:“It is truly a sad commentary that when faced with two choices-- to either uphold the Paris climate deal to combat perhaps the most significant challenge of our time, or, to abdicate all responsibility...

The madness surrounding Evergreen State College continues. As reported by The College Fix, last week a student “meeting” with school president George Bridges quickly turned into a profanity-laced fiasco with Bridges being told, among other things, to “shut the f*** up” and that he had the “f***ing nerve to, like, f***ing dehumanize (something).” Despite the mind-boggling degree of disrespect displayed by the activists, perhaps the most bizarre occurrence that took place is when President Bridges is instructed by students to put his hands down while speaking because it is “inappropriate” (to quote a voice heard in the video).

Three Democratic governors said Thursday they won’t let the United States back away from a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite President Donald Trump decision to withdraw from an international pact. “This is an insane move by this president,” California Gov. Jerry Brown said, blasting the decision as “deviant behavior from the highest office in the land.” Brown joined Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington state and Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York to form the U.S. Climate Alliance to uphold the Paris climate agreement, a pact involving nearly 200 nations aimed at slowing the warming of the planet. The...

Evergreen State College in Olympia will remain closed Friday after a "direct threat" was made to the campus. The Olympia campus was closed suddenly Thursday out of an abundance of caution, spokesman Zach Powers said. An unknown person made a threat of "campus violence" to Thurston County officials, he said. The college's president made the decision to close campus. The county released a copy of the phone call. A male caller told a dispatcher: "I'm on my way to Evergreen University now with a .44 Magnum. I'm going to execute as many people on that campus as I can get...

Video from inside Evergreen State College continues to leak, showing that protesters had at one point held administrators hostage until they agreed to comply with their demands. The incident took place during the second day of demonstrations demanding the resignation of Professor Bret Weinstein, who angered many students when he challenged the school’s decision to ask white people to leave campus for a day of diversity programming in an all-staff email.

An overwhelming number of people spoke in support of a citywide income tax in Seattle on Wednesday at City Hall. People in support of taxing the richest residents cited everything from “simple justice,” to the untapped pool of money that could be used to deal with pressing problems like homelessness and drug abuse. The proposed tax would be 1.5 percent on adjusted gross income over $250,000 per year. Councilmember Lisa Herbold says there are still many undecided details, chiefly how that income level would be calculated. The legal basis for such a selective tax is shaky and whatever the...

From all accounts, Molly Norris was a politically left-leaning cartoonist in Seattle who thought people just needed to lighten up a bit, and be able to freely express themselves, no matter what the topic. In 2010 Norris suggested a “Everybody Draw Mohammad Day.” A few days later she received her first death threat from a Muslim.

Students at Evergreen State College are furious that a video documenting their anarchic behavior has been made public, The College Fix reports. The footage shows students going berserk, swearing like your mother never heard and screaming about “racist white teachers,” “white-assed administrators,” and the obligatory “black power” slogans during what was supposed to be a “meeting” between the malcontent students, college president George Bridges and other college administrators. Activists are not pleased that the embarrassing video can now be seen by the world on the internet, and they they are demanding that the “stolen” document be “taken down” by this...
