Today was originally, Armistice Day, the end of World War I. Here's to my Grandfather, Edward Smith who served in a machine gun company in the Meuse-Argonne Forest and St Miheil battles. He saw more than any person should ever see and said very little about it to his wife or his son, my dad. It's said he suffered the ill effects of mustard gas. He did enjoy his time after the war in the Army of Occupation. Here's to grandpa, one of those Yanks who helped turn the tide of that awful war and bring it to an end.

This isn't the full list, it is the remaining three that WSJ had covered in this past year. 1 - USMC Lance Coporal William Kyle Carpenter of Company F, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, earned his medal for serving in the line of fire in Helmand Province on November 21, 2010. He was a member of a platoon-sized coalition force, comprised of two reinforced Marine rifle squads partnered with an Afghan National Army squad. 2 - USA Staff Sergeant Ryan M Pitts Company C, 2d Battalion, 503d Infantry Regiment earned his Medal of Honor for serving in the line of fire...

Fury: The Mother of all Tank Movies starring Brad Pitt, no I'm not a fan of his, but did enjoyed the movie. The authenticity of the tanks was the real thing, Sherman's and the German Tiger I. Pitt's character is a bit reminiscent of the role he played as a soldier in Inglorious Basterds, which also took place during WWII. He takes his five-man crew behind enemy lines, where they are outnumbered and outgunned. FURY is the first war film to feature a real life German Tiger I tank which actually came out of a museum collection. Tigers were the...

Veterans Day is soon approaching and there are many restaurants and companies who want to thank our veterans by providing them with discounts or a free meal. To those companies offering veterans a free meal or discount, the military community gives a collective thanks

"Why I hate cops- they roll heavier than we did outside the wire downrange, they use helicopters and machine guns and militarized stuff and drive tanks into crowds..."

I'm sharing this here because there isn't a single grunt who doesn't appreciate these loyal, faithful friends and guardians. I also know there are some reasonably high ranked grunts here, and a heck of a lot still hooked into the system who can spread the word. This is truly a vile act. They are not disposable sensor packages with teeth. They are friends. Colleagues. I don't even like dogs much, but having 90 lbs of warm fur and teeth watching over you is immensely reassuring.

... Larry received his wings and commission in the U.S Air Force in 1943. During WWII, he saw service in North Africa, Italy and China. He was recalled again for the Korean War. He was later assigned to the Philippines, Japan, and Okinawa. Major Guarino was flying combat missions in Southeast Asia in early 1965 when he was shot down and forced to eject over North Vietnam. He was captured and taken as prisoner of war, spending the next 2,801 days in captivity. Colonel Guarino was released on February 12, 1973. He was awarded the nation's second highest award, the...

FAIRBANKS — A recent survey of Eielson Air Force Base’s Lady of the Lake confirmed that the aircraft had a noteworthy history in the air before it was abandoned to its gravel pit lake grave. Work by about a dozen divers from Eielson and Fort Wainwright confirmed earlier this month that when she was airworthy, the Lady of the Lake was the specific aircraft that detected evidence of Soviet atomic testing in 1949, the first aircraft to do this. Most residents and visitors to Eielson Air Force Base know the Lady of the Lake as a specter of a plane....

I' m an old Freeper just getting into the VA healthcare system in Eugene, Oregon. Today's first appt went great. Met my PCP, she gave me a free blood pressure monitor to keep a log. And my monthly prescriptions prices are lower (I don't have any other insurance). I am impressed so far. Look forward to future visits.

SIERRA VISTA — As the new Sierra Vista Health Care Center is getting closer to completion, what will happen to the half century old existing hospital is being contemplated. The not-for-profit Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona, the successor to the former hospital board, is looking at gifting the 90,000-square-foot hospital to the Arizona Department of Veterans Services (ADVS) as a Veterans Home and Assistance Center. The foundation may even donate money to help in the renovation.

The Kurdish region of Iraq and Turkey, border Iran, and Syria. Kurds have a well developed, effective government, parliament and security force. The region has had nearly total independence since Iraq's defeat in the 1991 Gulf War. // Snipp // Largely corrupted remnants of U.S.-trained Iraqi Army, crumbled under the Saudi-wahhabi push East. Peshmerga recovered strategic northern positions, including suburbs of now, wahhab dominated City Mosul. //Snipp// Many Kurdish Iraqi leaders believe ever blossoming federal cronyism, and recently demonstrated national defense atrophy, lay bare a chronic Humpty Dumptyism. The Nation may best function as a Republic. “I don’t think Iraq...

In 1968 when I enlisted, my enlistment contract guaranteed me that for the rest of my life I could be seen at any VA hospital or clinic for free for the rest of my life on a tier system. 1st. To be seen were service connected disabilities. 2nd to be seen were active duty personnel and their families. 3rd. And last to be seen were all other veterans. You could walk-in and wait and you may have to wait all day but you would be seen by a doctor. All medications were free at any veterans hospital or clinic, no...

I'm a 62 year old Vietnam vet, no hero, just proud to have served my country and it was a great entrance into manhood. I am in the process of entering the VA healthcare system here in Oregon. No current health issues, but I'm registering since I recently was laid off and have no health insurance. I would appreciate Vet input on their experience with the healthcare they receive from the VA system in general and if anyone has had an experience with the Eugene, Oregon facility.

Defense officials are weighing a proposal from the director of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) to allow the nation’s 22 million honorably discharged veterans, and perhaps an equal number of their family members, to shop online for military exchange products and discounts. Shoppers who use the AAFES website enjoy savings of up to 25 percent on many brand name products. They also avoid state and local sale taxes on their purchases just like on-base shoppers do. By providing online discounts to millions of deserving veterans and families, said Thomas C. Shull, chief executive officer of AAFES, the...

Flipping through the channels, I stopped at the program showing D-day remembrance at Normandy beach. President of France is giving speech, remembering the D-day, sacrifices and thanking veterans for their contribution to freedom. World dignitaries are sitting in the audience along with remaining veterans, Queen of England with her husband and other heads of states. Among them camera swings to our Barak Hussein Obama, President of the USA - CHEWING FREAKIN' GUM! Another example of his "respect" for non-muslim warriors.
