First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Aspen on Friday afternoon and is here with her daughters for a ski vacation. Few details about her trip were available. Sources said she is staying at the home of Jim and Paula Crown, owners of the Aspen Skiing Co. She is reportedly skiing at Buttermilk today, where the Crowns, of Chicago, own a home on the Tiehack side. Several people have known about the “low-key” vacation, with the Secret Service in town for the past few days scoping out places for the family to relax and enjoy what the resort has to offer....

First lady Michelle Obama visited Nelson Mandela on the first day of her trip to South Africa today and told one greeter that her husband was "pouty" that he couldn't come along. The first lady's weeklong trip to South Africa and Botswana began with a meeting with one of the three wives of South African President Jacob Zuma. During her stop at the president's official residence in Pretoria she was greeted by Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma. Nic Dawes, the editor of South Africa's Mail and Guardian newspaper, tweeted that he shook the first lady's hand and wrote: "Michelle Obama certainly convinced the...

Fifty years. That's how long it's been since a sitting American President visited Puerto Rico. The last was John Kennedy in December 1961. So when word leaked out that President Obama will commemorate that Kennedy visit with a one-day stop in Puerto Rico on June 14, many in Washington were caught by surprise. The news electrified residents of the Caribbean island, which has been a U.S. territory for 112 years. It also provided yet another sign that Obama is determined to offer Latino voters many reasons to support his reelection effort. Still, Obama's visit is aimed more at the U.S....
  • Warm welcome for Obama in South America: Chilean president praises 'good-looking' Michelle

The welcome was warm, the setting lavish and both compliments and red wine flowed freely. But away from the splendour of La Moneda Palace, Barack Obama's whistlestop visit to Chile provoked as much anger as delight. Around 100 people gathered near the government building in Santiago to burn the U.S. flag in protest at both the presence of the president and American policy. Riot police eventually arrived to disperse the demonstration, leading to ugly scenes on the streets of the Chilean capital Santiago. The demonstration was partially sparked by air strikes on the civil war stricken Libya. Organiser Juan Cuevas...

"It's not the first time I've cooked for the President," says chef Alan Wong. "But every time, it's a chicken skin moment." Last night, Barack and Michelle Obama, Obama's sister and her husband and a half dozen friends dined at one of the President's favorite restaurants in Hawaii, Alan Wong's on King Street. Born and raised in Hawaii, Obama has adventurous tastes, says Wong, and always orders the multicourse chef's menu. Michelle, who usually eats lighter, joined him last night. On the menu:

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama is considering at least a short delay to the start of his holiday vacation in Hawaii so he can try to work out a deal with congressional Republicans on the Bush tax cuts that expire December 31, CNN has learned. Two senior administration officials tell CNN the White House has been getting signals that the lame duck session of Congress could drag on past December 18, when the president is scheduled to depart for Hawaii. Obama has privately said he is willing to stay in Washington until Christmas Eve if necessary to finish the...

What's scarier than being a Democrat this Election Day? A farmer finally decided to buy a TV. The store assured him that they would install the antenna and TV the next day. The next evening the farmer turned on his new TV and found only political ads on every channel. The next morning he turned the TV on and found only political ads again. When he came in to eat lunch he tried the TV again but still only found political ads. The next day when he still found only political ads he called the store to complain. The...

CHILMARK - The first family, holed up in their up-island rental for three rainy days, decided to ignore the continuing gloom yesterday and do some serious vacationing. President Obama, first lady Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha blew out of the big house shortly after 1:30 p.m. and headed to Oak Bluffs where they lunched with a big group of friends upstairs at Nancy’s - to the delight of at least 100 fried food fans awaiting their meal. The prez, like last year, ordered lots of Nancy’s fried specialties and lobster rolls at the outdoor counter as onlookers gawked and...

As the clouds and rain of recent days finally dissipated, the Obama family took in some lunch this afternoon at Nancy's restaurant in Oak Bluffs - and then the president went golfing. Police blocked off the area shortly before 2 p.m. President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and their daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9, arrived a short time later and walked into the fried seafood restaurant with friends and their children. Obama and his wife soon walked to the restaurant's takeout window. "How y'all doing?," Obama said warmly to the crowd. "Drying out? Finally!" The couple smiled and shook...

President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their two daughters Sasha and Malia traveled to Nancy's Restaurant on the waterfront of the Oak Bluffs section of Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday afternoon. Crowds gathered to watch as the president, wearing his White Sox baseball cap, noted the abundance of Red Sox caps. He and the First Lady shook hands and posed for pictures with folks in the crowd. The president ordered from the take-out window of the snack bar section of the eatery. "I love your watch," one woman told the First Lady, referencing a purple watch on her left wrist. "Oh,...

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. (AP) -- President Barack Obama had a simple task for his first morning on vacation: shoot over to a Martha's Vineyard bookstore to fill out his daughters' summer reading list and grab himself a novel. Easier said than done. His SUV, part of a 20-vehicle motorcade, passed through a cordon of Massachusetts State Police motorcycle officers, in a protective cocoon of Secret Service agents.......

VINEYARD HAVEN — The first family had an answer yesterday to those who said they were perhaps a little too reclusive while on the island. On the first full day of their Martha's Vineyard vacation, the Obamas were almost Clintonesque, first traveling to a Vineyard Haven bookstore before the president took in a round of golf in the early afternoon, followed by the first appearance of first lady Michelle Obama, who took the girls for ice cream in Oak Bluffs. At a press conference yesterday, White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton said President Barack Obama has a relatively spontaneous...
