In Virginia, Democrats are seeking to flip control of the state legislature, where Republicans hold a one-seat advantage in both the state Senate and House of Delegates. Democrats are eyeing seats in the northern Virginia counties outside of Washington, D.C. that have grown more liberal in recent election cycles.

Currently, the GOP is looking in relatively good shape, financially, for next year’s presidential election. But that doesn’t change the fact that in races around the country, Democrats almost always have more money than Republicans. A case in point is Virginia, whose legislative elections are tomorrow. A reader writes that “Democrats have $11.3 million in recent donations, compared to only $4.4 million for Virginia Republicans.” That sort of disproportion is hard, if not impossible, to overcome. At Liberty Unyielding, Hans Bader writes (links omitted): You may not be following Virginia’s legislative elections, which will occur on November 5. But left-wing...

Tim Hugo, the last Republican legislator in the Virginia suburbs closest to Washington, calls himself "Delegate Pothole." He tweets about neighborhood detours, car break-ins and lane closings. "Be sure to find an alternative route!" he wrote ahead of repair work at one intersection. Ask him what impact President Donald Trump's unpopularity in Virginia is having on next week's pivotal state election, and Hugo says, "I focus on the local issues." Ask whether Democrats are succeeding in nationalizing the last election before the 2020 presidential contest, and Hugo says, "I focus on the local issues."

Virginia holds state-legislative elections this year, and the outlook is cloudy for the state GOP, despite this year’s earlier scandals of Governor Ralph “Blackface” Northam, allegations of sexual assault against Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, and another blackface scandal involving Mark Herring, the state’s attorney general. If Virginia Republicans have a lousy year, many outside the state will wonder how they could fail to capitalize on the series of scandals. But the state party has been sailing into headwinds throughout the cycle. On November 5, Virginians will vote in elections for all 40 seats in the state senate and all 100...

Morrissey, a colorful and controversial former Richmond prosecutor, served eight years in the House as a Democrat before vacating the seat for an unsuccessful challenge of Dance as an independent. During his 30-year political career, he has brandished, sometimes literally, the image of “Fighting Joe” — a feisty populist who prides himself on serving constituents who are overlooked and underserved. Morrissey’s reputation also includes a misdemeanor conviction of contributing to the delinquency of a minor involving relations with his then-17-year-old law firm employee, whom he later married. His wife became a prominent figure in his campaign and introduced him at...

In this environment, there is serious talk amongst Virginia Republicans in NOVA about whether to embrace an agenda based on conservative principles versus embracing ideas that might appeal to liberal-leaning voters. It is a vigorous debate on whether Virginia can be restored to a red state, and if so, what sort of leaders will get it there. Virginia Senate District 13 is a microcosm of this fight. Sen. Dick Black is retiring, and a classic conservative versus establishment-moderate primary matchup will determine his successor. Senate District 13 includes parts of Loudoun County and Prince William County, which are among the...

I must be exaggerating, you say? Watch.CLICK ABOVE LINK FOR THE VIDEO Quote: “If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”He’s offering this to make the case that the new bill is less draconian than its right-wing critics claim. Yes, he allows, there will be situations where a child is delivered alive and then killed on...

Virginia Democrat Delegate Kathy Tran proposed a measure last week that would not only allow abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy in the state, but would also permit a woman to decide whether she wants to “abort” her baby as she is dilating and about to give birth. The bill is proposed as New York Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo has just signed into law the Reproductive Health Act, which eliminates recognition of “personhood” in the unborn and defines a “person” as a “human being who has been born and is alive.” That law has been referred to as permitting...

Republicans in Virginia are taking their concerns to the Supreme Court after the state’s district map was redrawn. GOP state House Speaker Kirk Cox slammed the new map on Wednesday, saying it was created “to give Democrats the advantage at every turn.” He said that according to these district lines, six districts that went for Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential election now would have elected Barack Obama. A federal judge ordered the map to be redrawn last year after he ruled the lines drawn in 2011 were gerrymandered. The state election will move forward this year with the new...

""Third Trimester Late Term Abortion Bill Backed by Northam, Fairfax, Herring, Democratic Legislators"" Democratic leaders backed legislation repealing restrictions on third trimester late term abortions, repealing clinic health and safety standards, and eliminating informed consent requirements, among other provisions. They noted the measures were unlikely to pass in 2019, but vowed to enact them if Democrats take the Virginia House and Senate in November's elections. On Thursday in Richmond, Democratic leaders announced their support for a sweeping repeal of abortion restrictions in Virginia, including deregulation of third trimester late term abortions up until the moment of birth. The press conference,...
