As most of you have heard by now, former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain is now in the top tier of candidates running for the Republican nomination for President. It comes of no surprise to me, but it may shock many of you out there that in the most recent CBS poll just released, Herman has pulled into a tie for the lead with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and has leap-frogged over flash-in-the-pan and former frontrunner Texas Governor Rick Perry. The question most people have as well as the political pundits out there is now is Herman Cain an...

A new survey by Public Policy Polling simply concludes, "The Presidential primary in Virginia depends greatly on whether or not Sarah Palin enters the race." Palin has enough support that were she to enter or absent would be decisive in the votes the rest of the field secures. If Palin stays out of the race, Michele Bachmann, who appeals to the same Tea Party faction that Palin champions, would take the lead with 21% followed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Mitt Romney at 18%. If Palin does run, she'll chip away at Bachmann's base and push Perry into the...

There’s the stereotype of the Sarah Palin supporter, and then there’s Sonnie Johnson. The 30-year-old African-American mother and wife is featured in “The Undefeated” as one of the many people Palin captivated when John McCain thrust her onto the national stage as his vice presidential running mate in 2008. In Pella, Iowa today for the premiere of the film, Johnson said she latched on to Palin when the former Alaska governor took the stage at the Republican National Convention. “We were watching it on TV and my daughter was like, ‘A girl can be president?,’” Johnson recalled. “And I said,...

In a sign that Donald Trump’s self-promotion tour and possible run for president continues to make the Republican establishment nervous, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Wednesday minimized the wealthy developer’s run because he was focusing on President Obama’s birthplace. “I don't think he is really serious when we … see a campaign launched on the birther issue,” said Cantor (R- Va.) speaking on CNN’s “American Morning.”Trump has become almost a fixture on cable television shows in recent weeks as he has resurrected the issue of where the president was born. The Obama campaign long ago released documents showing Obama...

On Wednesday, controversial former Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) mocked former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, outlined death threats he and other Members received last year and detailed inflammatory rhetoric, asking his supporters to “stand against it.” “[T]here has been a stream of violence and threats of violence by the right wing against Democrats. [Rep. Gabrielle Giffords] warned against it, and then became a terrible victim of it. Palin has instigated it, and then tried to pretend that it doesn’t exist,” Grayson wrote in an e-mail to supporters. Grayson said it was Palin’s appearance on “The Sean Hannity Show,” where she complained...

David Paul Kuhn snagged a fascinating interview with Virginia Sen. Jim Webb. As you may recall, Webb was secretary of Navy under Reagan, but in 2006 ran as a Democrat against then-Sen. George Allen, ultimately defeating him. Kuhn's interview may spark speculation that Webb is laying the groundwork for a future party switch. Webb voted for health care reform, but tells Kuhn: "I told him this was going to be a disaster," Webb recalls. "The president believed it was all going to work out." Kuhn goes on to note that Webb "identifies himself as a Democrat. But he has few...

NORFOLK, Va. — Sarah Palin on Sunday painted President Barack Obama's administration as a cowering giant intent on surrendering the nation's mantle as a superpower and willing to sell out its allies. --snip-- "So while President Obama is getting pushed around by the likes of Russia and China, our allies are left to wonder about the value of an alliance with our country any more. They're asking what is it worth," she said.

*** (When I make this mark ***, I am noting a place a Blue GOP centrist sub/urbanite is apt to disagree and hang up. Instead, I invite you to comment and/or disagree, or at least reconsider and continue reading. I promise not to say anything petty about your side…or tell a Mitch joke…but do try to put your whole mind to this. I’ll admit you’re my betters if you’ll admit you have a real short attention span.) 2009 might be remembered as the year the Fairfax County Republican Party got its groove back. The Grand Old Party won special elections for Braddock District supervisor and Providence District school board member, two seats that had been held by Democrats for several years. They also managed to knock off two incumbent Democrats in the House of Delegates after losing ground on that front in the last two campaign cycles. And local Republicans were produced a 4,500-vote win in Fairfax County for Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) this past November. Though McDonnell was heavily favored to win the gubernatorial race statewide,...

Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th, is tied with his most prominent Republican opponent, but the contest could change dramatically if former Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. enters the contest, according to a new survey. Perriello, who defeated Goode in November 2008, is tied at 44 percent with Sen. Robert Hurt, R-Pittsylvania, one of a half-dozen candidates for the Republican nomination. If Goode runs as an independent, he and Perriello tie at 41 percent, with Hurt getting only 12 percent, according to the survey. Public Policy Polling surveyed 924 registered voters in Virginia's 5th Congressional District from Friday through Wednesday. The margin...

By Mary Ann Ford | mford@pantagraph.com | Posted: Friday, January 29, 2010 9:00 pm | (10) Comments Font Size: Default font size Larger font size NORMAL — Not everyone at Friday’s news conference supported spending $8 billion for high-speed rail. Several people gathered at the Amtrak station held signs and even made negative comments while Sen. Dick Durbin was speaking. They questioned projections of economic growth from high-speed rail spending and the wisdom of spending so much money in the face of mounting state and federal budget deficits. “I’m really upset,” said Jeff Strange of Bloomington. While officials say the...

Fairfax County Supervisor Pat S. Herrity (R-Springfield) said Wednesday that he will seek the Republican nomination against first-term U.S. Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.), as both parties in Northern Virginia begin to ramp up for the contest. Herrity, 49, an accountant whose father was chairman of the Fairfax Board of Supervisors in the 1970s and '80s, had contemplated entering the race for weeks. Word leaked about his potential candidacy, and on Wednesday, he called his announcement "probably the worst-kept secret" in Fairfax. "Things have changed dramatically in the last four years," Herrity said at a news conference at the West...

This is why Republicans lose elections: Crabill is trying to position herself as a conservative in the 99th House of Delegates district of Virginia, against a popular Democrat incumbant. But at the Northern Neck Republican website, the visitor is presented with Crabill at a Yacht & Country Club with elitist-looking old white women. At a formal tea party. Not the populist, conservative mass movement tea party rallies, but an elitist tea party of rich old white women.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) generated the kind of buzz other politicians covet when he launched his bid to help rebrand the Republican Party last spring. Television crews and reporters wedged themselves among the crowd of party faithful to cover the National Council for a New America's first event at a packed pizza parlor in an Arlington, Va., strip mall. The resulting coverage dominated cable news chatter for the next week. Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney were also on board. But the council has since flamed out – at least publicly. Since its launch, the National Council hasn’t held a single...
