Sometime around midnight, on July 18, 1969 Kennedy drove his Oldsmobile 88 off of a small bridge on Chappaquiddick island, into eight feet of chilly water. The vehicle landed upside-down. While Kennedy managed to free himself from the wreck and swim to safety, his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne was left in the car to drown.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of obese American adults outweighs the number of those who are merely overweight, according to the latest statistics from the federal government. Numbers posted by the National Center for Health Statistics show that more than 34 percent of Americans are obese, compared to 32.7 percent who are overweight. It said just under 6 percent are "extremely" obese. "More than one-third of adults, or over 72 million people, were obese in 2005-2006, the NCHS said in its report. Forgive me if the headline above sounds slightly exploitive. My intention is not to piggyback on a personal tragedy, but I did want to get your attention.

This simply can’t be real. Not because it’s so shameless and absurd, but because its shamelessness and absurdity encapsulate too perfectly the way this travesty of a bill has been sold. If you were writing the broadest possible satire of the “Grand Bargain” that you could think of, how else could it end except with Teddy croaking out a few bars in his new mother tongue in a sort of apocalyptic pander? Until someone gives me proof, I’m assuming it’s bogus. It’s just too bad to be true.
