Dear Diary: A singer often in need of a handy practice area, I sometimes vocalize in the subway (in addition to busking). The cathedral-like acoustics of these underground passages are friendly to the voice, and on my lunch break I can loosen my tie and warm up with some scales. I have found a little cul-de-sac perfect for this at a station near work, out of the paths of the Midtown commuters rushing through. Passers-by who hear my tenor coloratura sometimes pop their heads around the corner in curiosity; some smile or wave. But I go there for the architecture,...

The New York City subway is cramped with people, but a new study shows that the underground system may be much more crowded than we realized. Scientists from Weill Cornell Medical College have unveiled their findings after 18 months swabbing turnstiles, ticket kiosks, railings and benches for DNA on the world's largest transport system. They found 15,152 different types of microorganisms that share the train with its 5.5 million riders, including bubonic plague, dysentery and meningitis. Principal Investigator Dr Chris Mason and his team released findings from their 'PathoMap' study on Thursday, a map of all the microorganisms and DNA...

Dear Diary: A New York City busker is the recipient of love, affection, cheers, kisses and souvenirs from around the world. Or, sometimes, a plaintive shrug when a commuter cannot locate a dollar. Once when I was singing in the subway, such a man walked away dejected, then came bounding back, beaming, proudly offering a fresh yellow apple from his groceries. Yes, the money makes a difference, but I’m thankful for it all. Bills spend easily, but coins accumulate. On a recent night I sorted and rolled over a year’s worth. Among them were a British 50-pence coin, two 5-cent...

Dear Diary: Some people look like their dogs; some like their spouses. You see they belong together, and you smile. This subway rider looked like, and belonged to, his thick book. Ginger hair, pulled back in a tail away from his ruddy baby face, matching his scruffy beard. Youthful and burly, rustic and earthy, dressed for the outdoors in a jacket and a pale red flannel shirt. Not yet spoiled by city life, innocent, unadventured, but poised to begin, clutching his treasured story in readiness. What was that book to him? Fiction? History? Autobiography? No clue from his silent eyes,...
