Students at Louisiana's top public high school rushed to respond after a teacher used a racial epithet in class Thursday (May 4). Ben Franklin High Principal Patrick Widhalm confirmed the authenticity of several videos that students posted on social media. In them, a white teacher told a black student it was OK for the teacher to use what is universally considered the most offensive slur against African-Americans. The teacher is a permanent substitute and was not on campus as of 3:30 p.m., Widhalm said. The school is investigating, which will take several days, and will take appropriate action, he said....

New York’s Columbia University announced last week it is hiring a full time “Coordinator of Muslim Life” to provide guidance and support to the Muslim community and opening up prayer space for all Muslims year round. This comes on the heels of heated demands and a petition from the Muslim Student Association (MSA), stating an advisor and prayer room is a necessity for the Muslim community because “hateful Islamophobic rhetoric” and “anti-Muslim violence” is putting the “entire community under enormous risk, stress, and insecurity.”

Several black activists at Pomona College, associated with the Claremont Colleges, have sent a letter to the college president asking administrators to "take action" against conservative journalists from the student publication The Claremont Independent. The president, David Oxtoby, posted an email defending the right of Black Lives Matter critic Heather Mac Donald to speak.  Mac Donald was physically threatened and forced to cancel a lecture at Claremont following protests against her appearance. The activists claim that "free speech" is incompatible with "truth" and therefore should not be protected.

The alleged rape of a Maryland high school student by two schoolmates — one an undocumented immigrant — has prompted a torrent of threats and hate messages to the school and the school system, a county school spokesman said Thursday. Hundreds of hate-filled emails and calls have been received by Rockville High School and the Montgomery County Public School District, Derek Turner said. The calls and emails came after police said two students, 18-year-old Henry Sanchez-Milian and 17-year-old Jose Montano, had been arrested and charged as adults with first-degree rape.

When President Obama came into the White House eight years ago, he promised a "New Era of Responsibility." It didn't work out that way, particularly for student loans, leaving President Trump with a huge mess to clean up. In fact, when it comes to borrowing for college, students are being utterly irresponsible. A recent survey by LendEDU of 500 current college students found that 49.8% of them think that the federal government will forgive their loans after they graduate.

Student demands for censorship get a lot of coverage. Spiked Online’s Free Speech University Rankings, now in its third annual edition, argues that there is a “crisis of free speech on campus”.
