An Alabama fan was fatally beaten in a bar fight at Ponchatoula Pub while celebrating the Crimson Tide's win over LSU. A physical altercation involving 46-year-old Robert Bowers and two individuals, later identified as Azia Crockett and Ryan Anthony, took place inside the pub just after midnight on the morning on Nov. 4.

Nostrils flare dripping with venomous anger, the eyes are big, onyx and lifeless; crimson blood pours from its back consecrating the arena; the front hooves beat the ground relentlessly as dust, sweat and rage hang heavy in the afternoon sun; it snorts and roars with contempt; the head, crowned with piercing horns, is lowered; and the pent-up energy is unleashed with a furious charge at the taunting matador who turns on his axis elegantly to enshroud the incensed bull in his blood red cape as man and beast engage in a choreographed macabre dance of death. It was at the...
  • Texas Head Coach Tom Herman Might Be the Biggest Sore Loser in College Football

Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman might be a good football coach, but over the past few weeks, he's continued to reveal himself as quite a sore loser. Herman's Texas squad lost a close game to West Virginia on Saturday after Mountaineers quarterback Will Grier threw a last-minute touchdown and then ran the ball in on a two-point conversion with 16 seconds left on the clock to win 42-41 in Austin. It was a fantastic, gutsy call from West Virginia's head coach Dana Holgorson and it paid off, but here's how Herman responded postgame.

Gus Malzahn will be Auburn’s head coach in 2019. Auburn athletic director Allen Greene addressed Malzahn’s future with reporters Tuesday and confirmed that Malzahn will return for his seventh season with the Tigers. “He’s our coach for the future,” Greene said per AuburnSports.com. “He’ll be the coach next year. He’s already proven that he can get through adversity.” Malzahn has taken plenty of heat during his time as head coach. He led the Tigers to a national runner-up finish in 2013, his first season, but went 8-5, 7-6 and 8-5 in the three seasons after. Last season, Malzahn led the...
  • College football's messy reality: Bad teams are going to win Power Five divisions this season

WHEN BAD TEAMS WIN POWER FIVE DIVISIONS As is often the case, division imbalance will lead to some really sketchy teams winning their half of a conference and going on to a likely beatdown in the league championship game. There are three crazily out-of-whack conferences right now presenting exactly that scenario. ACC Coastal: Are we really ready for Pittsburgh (21) in the ACC title game? The Panthers are 5-4 overall, 4-1 in the league, and have given up more points (274) than they’ve scored (245). They’ve also been outgained on the season by more than 400 yards. They’re 1-3 in...
  • Should the Big Ten Have Buyer's Remorse Over Adding Maryland and Rutgers?

    11/06/2018 9:50:29 AM PST · by C19fan · 25 replies
    SI ^ | November 5, 2018 | Laken Leitman
There are no take-backs when it comes to conference expansion. Once you add teams to your league, you’re stuck with them until further notice. That’s the unfortunate reality right now for the Big Ten, which would be justified in feeling a small measure of buyer’s remorse for Maryland and Rutgers, two schools that joined the league during its last round of expansion in 2014 and have spent much of this season making the wrong kind of headlines. The additions were designed to increase the league’s TV revenue potential and expanding its footprint to the Washington D.C. and New York/New Jersey...

The Blackhawks fired coach Joel Quenneville on Tuesday and named Jeremy Colliton to replace him, making him the 38th coach in franchise history. The Hawks also fired assistant coaches Kevin Dineen and Ulf Samuelsson and named Barry Smith an assistant on Colliton’s staff. The rest of the coaching staff will remain with the team. The Hawks failed to make the playoffs last season for the first time during Quenneville’s tenure. They are 6-6-3 this season and have lost five straight. The Hawks haven’t won a playoff series since winning the Stanley Cup in 2015, their third championship in six years....

The U.S. Olympic Committee is moving to revoke USA Gymnastics' status as the governing body for the sport at the Olympic level, a move that comes in reaction to an organization that has botched its own restructuring in the wake of a sexual abuse case involving former team doctor Larry Nassar. In an open letter to the gymnastics community Monday, USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland said "you deserve better" and that the challenges facing USA Gymnastics are more than it is capable of overcoming as currently constructed. Under its bylaws, the USOC has the power to review all matters related to...

Before the late-afternoon NFL games even kicked off, the writing was on the wall -- bookmakers from Nevada to New Jersey were taking a bath on a Sunday that will go down as one of the betting public's best. Nevada industry sources estimated the state's sportsbooks lost in the range of $7 million to $10 million overall on Sunday. In the early games, the books found themselves holding lopsided betting action on the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers, two popular picks that easily covered the spread. Their fate was sealed by the Kansas City Chiefs, the most heavily bet favorite...

College football rankings for week 11 have been released. Alabama remains the top-ranked team, while West Virginia, Syracuse, and Boston College made significant leaps in the polls. Washington, which clipped Stanford, 27-23, moved into the AP Poll at No. 20. Syracuse, who defeated Wake Forest, 41-24, surged nine spots to No. 13, due to a combination of their win and losses from other ranked teams. Boston College vaulted seven spots to No. 17 on the strength of a 31-21 victory at Virginia Tech. The Orange and Eagles both made 11-point leaps in the Coaches Poll. NC State, Iowa State, Michigan...

Alabama came to Baton Rouge Saturday preparing for its first true test of the season, but the undefeated Crimson Tide were unstoppable in Death Valley. Tua Tagovailoa accounted for three touchdowns and the Alabama defense shut out the Tigers in front of more than 100,000 fans to extend their lead in the SEC West and take another step toward locking up a College Football Playoff spot. With the Crimson Tide up 22-0, cameras caught one exasperated LSU fan making extended eye contact with the camera. She instantly became the college football meme of the season.

Here are 10 takeaways from a wild weekend of college football: 1. The center of the college football universe, for the greater part of the past two decades, has been located in the Southeast. Datelines from Gainesville to Tuscaloosa, Clemson to Baton Rouge have dominated the sport. And as Alabama’s march to the 2018 national title appears as much of a coronation as a competition, there’s little argument that the sport’s heartbeat this season lies deep within SEC country. That’s what makes the next two weeks such a compelling anomaly, as Boston and New York City project to become the...

LSU asked for all the smoke, and boy did it get it. Alabama rendered the Tigers’ pedestrian offense scoreless, while allowing it to total 196 yards on 60 plays from scrimmage. Quarterback Joe Burrow was in fear for his life all game long, especially with Quinnen Williams, Isaiah Buggs, Christian Miller and Anfernee Jennings in his face. He was sacked five times, with two of them coming via Williams. With quite a few National Football League scouts in attendance at Tiger Stadium, the Birmingham native is looking like a concrete first-round pick for next year’s draft. Williams, a redshirt sophomore,...
