Sure we have an midterm election coming up, but, in the interest of keeping Freepers aware of important events, in one week, an American born player will compete for the World Chess Championship for the first time since 1972. Fabiano Caruana will challenge Magnus Carlsen. It promises to be a real ripper...

Many years ago the world checkers championship was held in Asheville, N.C. The winner was also a chess master who had played Bobby Fisher to a draw.
I am not sure I agree but he said that checkers was just as difficult as chess.

When I become president of the World Chess Federation (any day now), the only approved chess game will be "King of the Hill." The first player to get his king to one of the four center squares wins.

I have played chess for forty years. I tried checkers. Checkers is harder. I am not joking.

I bought an inexpensive electronic chess game. I could not beat it at the easiest level. Just not my game.

FIDE is the only int’l organization that can boast to be more corrupt than the OIC, the UN, and FIFA...put together...

What's black's defense?

Thanks for the heads-up. I knew this was coming up. I hope I'm not too busy to pay attention. (And also that I don't forget!)

International Organization and “corrupt” are synonymous.

Carlen is a machine. I wouldn’t bet against him.

"Carlsen-Caruana"
That's impressive. Day's as the World Chess Champion, nights as That Other Guy, the third Tenor. George (the other George) would be blown away!

I bought an AI chess game, too. The first time I played it, it was at the maximum difficulty level and I beat it. But I never beat it on the easy level. There was so much time between responses at the hardest setting, I was forced to study the board. On the easy level, the responses came so quickly, I sped up playing, too, and make mistakes.

I am just not good at chess. I have no idea why as I am very good at checkers. At least I once was.
One of my best friends is president of Mensa for a large area. He is also a chess addict. He has asked me to join but I was just not interested. Now I don’t think I could pass their standards. My friend by the way thinks I am smarter than he is.
