Aftershocks of the magnitude 7.1 earthquake near Ridgecrest have been creeping into areas close to two major earthquake faults, a development that is generating interest and some concern among seismologists over whether it could trigger another huge temblor. Both faults are capable of producing new earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater. The U.S. Geological Survey says the chance of an earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater from the July 5 earthquake is 1 in 300 — “possible, but with a low probability.”

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Kern County in California on Friday evening -- just a day after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that was the largest temblor in the region in two decades, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed. Shaking on Friday evening was felt as far away as Las Vegas and Los Angeles and into northern Mexico. The USGS said there was a 5 percent chance a larger quake could still follow. The odds that Southern California will experience another earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater in the next week are now nearly 11%, according to preliminary estimates from seismologists. And the chances that a quake will surpass the 7.1 temblor that struck near Ridgecrest on Friday night are roughly 8% to 9%, said Caltech seismologist Lucy Jones.

Ridgecrest, California — A 6.4 magnitude earthquake is still fresh on everyone's mind in Ridgecrest and the aftershocks won't let them forget it. After the quake, rattled nerves kept Donnie Morrison's family up through the night. "We had our shoes by the bed. We had our clothes ready to go if we had to bail out real quick," Morrison said. A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Thursday, the largest temblor to hit the region in decades. The 10:33 a.m. quake was centered in the Searles Valley, a remote area of Kern County about 100 miles from Los Angeles.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Thursday, officials said. The quake hit the Kern County community of Searles Valley, about 160 miles northeast of Los Angeles, CBS Los Angeles reported. The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck at 10:33 a.m. PT. The earthquake was initially given a magnitude of 6.6, but was later revised to 6.4. No injuries were immediately reported Thursday, the San Bernardino County Fire Department said. They said buildings and roads "sustained varying degrees of damage."
