Advocate for wounded troops performing at Naval Medical Center San DiegoSome of actor Gary Sinise’s most memorable roles have been public servants injured in the line of fire who found solace in the healing power of relationships. As Lt. Dan in the 1994 movie “Forrest Gump,” he played an angry Vietnam War veteran whose friendship with the title character helps him make peace with life as a double amputee. In the television series “CSI: NY,” Sinise is a police detective who leans on his girlfriend to recover from a gunshot wound. His interactions with real-life men and women on the...

These smart homes that we're building are specifically designed to fit the needs of these wounded warriors. ... So we're going to build J.B. one of these homes, and obviously we have to have the money to do that. My part of the partnership here is raising awareness and funds, and I do that partially through a concert in the town or city that the wounded warrior is from and wants to live in. So we'll be coming to Martinsville the night before the race and doing a concert at the high school, which was one of the biggest places...

I'd like to tell you about an American hero I know: Gary Sinise. Gary, as you know (unless you live under a rock), played Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump and currently stars in CSI New York. He boasts too many other award-winning roles on stage and screen to list. What you probably don't know is how much time, energy, and money Gary spends to serve our troops, both active-duty and veterans, and their families. I first saw Gary perform in the basement of a Catholic church in Highland Park, IL about a million years ago. The lighting was rotten and...

There’s a memorial in Brooklyn that honors all the first responders that were killed on Sept. 11 called the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance. There are 417 faces of first responders that were lost that day. Back in 2006, they had completed about one-third of that memorial and they ran out of money. A firefighter friend of mine took me out to see it and I offered to try and help them raise the additional money to complete the memorial. They liked that idea, so we put a concert together at Brooklyn College where my band, Lieutenant Dan Band, played, and...

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the GI Film Festival at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The Festival took place in one day and showed films that portray American enlisted men and women in a favorable light as opposed to the usual Hollywood fare. This festival was an offshoot of the main GI Film Festival which takes place in May every year in Washington D.C. The main event lasts seven days and includes showings of approximately 50 films. This was a one day shortened version in which the crème of the crop were exhibited. You can...

BROTHERS AT WAR is an intimate portrait of an American family during a turbulent time. Jake Rademacher sets out to understand the experience, sacrifice, and motivation of his two brothers serving in Iraq. The film follows Jake’s exploits as he risks everything—including his life—to tell his brothers’ story. Often humorous, but sometimes downright lethal, BROTHERS AT WAR is a remarkable journey where Jake embeds with four combat units in Iraq. Unprecedented access to U.S. and Iraqi combat units take him behind the camouflage curtain with secret reconnaissance troops on the Syrian border, into sniper "Hide Sites" in the Sunni Triangle,...

In past discussions of potential IL senatorial candidates, I've read some acrimonious responses about how terrible it is that some have proposed -"celebrities" - like Coach Mike Ditka or Illinois native Gary Sinise as potentially great candidates. I too have usually been skeptical of celebrities wanting to turn politician (aside from Reagan). Yes Arnold is a phony, useless RINO. Yes, Ventura is a kook. However, many have jumped to conclusions about those posts suggesting that we "draft" actor Gary Sinise for the Republican nomination for the IL Senate seat in 2010 - for example. http://www.SiniseForSenate.com There is an ENORMOUS difference...

I have received a considerable number of responses to my "Draft" Mike Ditka for US Senate petition suggesting that Illinois' own Gary Sinise would be a great candidate for Senate. I cannot disagree. Mr. Sinise has demonstrated great leadership and altruism as a citizen. Therefore I have generated a petition to draft Mr. Sinise as well. Perhaps one of them will step up to the plate when the primary season comes around. It is never too early to get started on a grass roots campaign. There's an online petition to encourage or "draft" Mr. Sinise (a/k/a "Lt. Dan" from Forrest...

"Draft" Gary Sinise for United States Senate (R-Illinois). Apparently "Lt. Dan" is from Illinois! There's a petition at the site to urge him to run in 2010.

Since war became a geographically distant but very real way of life after Sept. 11, 2001, no Hollywood star has stepped up to support active duty U.S. military personnel and wounded veterans like Gary Sinise. There is no close second. And quietly, as is in his nature, he is becoming something akin to this generation´s Bob Hope. One step in conferring this worthy title on the award-winning actor, director and producer occurred last week when President Bush bestowed on him the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest civilian honor awarded to citizens for exemplary deeds performed in service of the...

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5, 2005 – Each week the cast of "CSI: NY" uses scientific skill to solve mysteries. But the reason Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld visited the show's set in Studio City here Aug. 4 was no mystery: actor Gary Sinise is a solid supporter of U.S. servicemembers, and Rumsfeld's a big fan of Sinise and his efforts. Rumsfeld visited the CSI set to thank Sinise personally for his support of the "America Supports You" program through his "Operation Iraqi Children" effort. WASHINGTON, July 4, 2005 – Actor Gary Sinise has been a busy man over the past few years, and not just with acting gigs. Sinise has set a blistering pace in another venture: supporting American servicemembers. One way he has contributed to this effort is through his nonprofit organization "Operation Iraqi Children," which he co-founded with "Seabiscuit" author Laura Hillenbrand in March 2004. The organization collects and ships school supplies and toys to Iraq, which are then distributed to the children by American servicemembers. Sinise said this project not only helps the Iraqi children with needed materials, it boosts the...
