SALINAS, Calif. — Monterey County Sheriff Steve Bernal announced Monday that he will no longer allow a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent to have a desk in the Monterey County Jail. A new California law going into effect January 1, 2018, SB54, declares California as a "sanctuary state." Bernal said his decision to remove the ICE agent's desk was a result of complying with SB54, as well as consulting with several stakeholders who advocate for immigrants' rights on the Central Coast. An ICE agent was given a desk at the Monterey County Jail two years ago, shortly after Bernal...

For those you have engaged in public advocacy in the past: what is the right/best way to petition the county sheriff's office or local police departments, to ask them to issue a public statement saying "We will not obey or enforce any illegal or unconstitutional laws"? Hoping that some of you have been through something similar in the past and can offer good solid advice. Thanks FReepers. PS: if your answer is "Move to another state" or "It's too late for your state" -- that's not helpful. Yes, we know the long-term solution -- but some still want to put...

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich spoke out last week about the fatal shooting at Freeman High School in rural Washington state, saying that he believed the media and society in general were partially to blame for the attack rather than the guns used by the shooter. “I carried a gun all my life,” Knezovich said at a Thursday press conference. “I hunted. I shot. My friends and I — it’s hunting season back home. When I was in high school, every one of those rigs in the high school parking lot had a gun in the gun rack. Why? We...

Yesterday New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order barring law enforcement officials from inquiring about the citizenship status of suspects during investigations. It would also apply to other state agencies outside of law enforcement in most cases. In other words, rather than just refusing to cooperate with ICE when they seek to deport illegal aliens, Cuomo is raising the bar and basically pretending that we don’t even have any immigration laws. While I’m sure there were plenty of Social Justice Warriors in New York City cheering the announcement, it didn’t go over so well with everyone. That includes...

THE first presidential pardon of Donald Trump’s administration was granted this week to a former sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona. In July, 85-year-old Joe Arpaio had been found guilty by a federal court of criminal contempt, and he was due to be sentenced next month. His pardon was unusual in several respects, not least because it came at such an early stage of Trump’s presidency. However, it was not unexpected: Arpaio had been a prominent supporter of Trump throughout the presidential campaign. The two men seem to have a lot common. They both view themselves as archetypal Alpha males. They...

Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke’s path to the GOP nomination for the United States Senate in Wisconsin just got a whole lot easier, and conservatives across the nation are celebrating. Popular conservative Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch announced that she will NOT challenge Sheriff Clarke for the GOP nomination next year. On the heels of Kleefisch’s announcement, millionairess Nicole Schneider also put an end to speculation that she might challenge Sheriff Clarke by leaking the classic line that she wanted “to spend more time with her family.” Schneider was not regarded as a serious candidate beyond the fact that her family’s trucking...

Don’t mess with Texas! “ Steve Malzberg: “I know you brought up the possibility of jailing such Sheriffs recently.” Greg Abbott: “We have. It’s a two-step process. One, as Governor I could unilaterally use my office to take funds away from Travis County that had been previously granted to them under Governor’s grants for criminal justice reasons and we...
