With Dan Rather hosting CBS' coverage tonight of the 3rd presidential debate, moderated by Bob Schieffer, I thought it an interesting historical note that both men were featured in the Sunday Doonesbury strip 30 years ago today. This message has no point, in particular. I just got a kick out of it, and thought others might, as well...

St. Petersburg, Fla. — As Bob Schieffer of CBS News polishes his questions for the final presidential debate tomorrow, he might want to take a page from Daniel Farley. And Randee Jacobs. And Norma-Jean Laurent, Matthew O'Brien, James Varner, Sarah Degenhart and Linda Grabel. For those who didn't catch the second presidential debate on Friday, these seven were among a group of undecided voters selected by the Gallup Organization to question the candidates. And unlike many of the reporters whose job it is to interview politicians, they displayed an instinctive grasp for the best way to ask a question, one...

**Shieffer Speaks at Olsson's** ARLINGTON, VA -- CBS's Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer appeared at Olsson's bookstore in Arlington, Va, where he signed his latest book [highly recommended--see Amazon.com], discussed current events, and answered a few questions. He mentioned this "10-minute" interview and the picture above (he likes the photo and appreciates that he looks statesmanlike). He's a personable fellow, comes across as upfront & sincere, and will probably do quite well as moderator at the prez debates next week. Smiling, Schieffer said that he's very excited about the opportunity to moderate the prez debate in Arizona next week....

Bob Schieffer did not even try to hide his bias for John Kerry, on CNN's Larry King Live, tonight, Monday, 10-04-04. Bob Schieffer began his talk with King by taking up for Dan Rather and by saying when asked what he thought about Rather's situation, that he thought it was terrible, that people were going to these lengths. Terrible that, the bloggers on the Internet were waging a Jhad -- Holy War -- on Dan Rather. Bob Schieffer said that he was pleased that John Kerry is up in the polls. Schieffer said that he believed it was due to...

CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer acted concerned, in a September 13th commentary, that rich people were abusing the campaign laws by funneling money to so-called 527 groups. Schieffer complained that, "One of the President's strongest supporters, Texas oil man Boone Pickens, had given the Swift Boat group a half million dollars" and "two other Bush supporters" chipped in more than $200,000 each. Then Schieffer added in passing that George Soros is a billionaire "financing millions of dollars of attack ads against President Bush…" Schieffer called these examples of "how the big money boys on both sides can find...

A Very Brief Interview with Bob Schieffer *** Exclusive *** Bob Schieffer was kind enough to grant me a brief, impromptu interview outside of CBS News Studios in Washington, DC. INDC: "Mr. Schieffer, do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions about the CBS memo scandal?" Schieffer: "Uh, sure, go ahead." INDC: "I was just wondering if you had any comment on what you think may happen with this entire (forgery) situation ..." Schieffer: "Here is all I can tell you: we made a bad mistake. We've admitted we made the mistake, we've appointed some distinguished outside...

Sticking it to CBS and Kerry The Drudge Report claims that Bush officials want CBS News correspondent Bob Schieffer removed as the moderator for the final (Oct. 13th) Presidential debate. If true, this would appear to be a clever move to keep the story about the CBS forged document scandal in the public eye, while simultaneously punishing CBS for it's biased and shoddy journalism. But characterizing it as merely a “clever move” misses the underlying genius. It would be a BRILLIANT political move, simultaneously skewering CBS and the Kerry campaign. Let's look ahead and see why. There are only three...

Date posted online: Wednesday, September 15, 2004 Schieffer: CBS needs to prove memos on Bush were authentic By Dave Dreeszen, Journal business editor CBS News' Bob Schieffer said Tuesday he hopes the network does more reporting to definitively prove the authenticity of memos 60 Minutes II received about President Bush's service in the Air National Guard. "I think we have to find some way to show our viewers they are not forgeries,'' Schieffer, CBS' chief Washington correspondent and host of the network's "Face the Nation,'' said at a news conference in Sioux City. "I don't know how we're going to...

"I think we have to find some way to show our viewers they are not forgeries,'' Schieffer, CBS' chief Washington correspondent and host of the network's "Face the Nation,'' said at a news conference in Sioux City. "I don't know how we're going to do that without violating the confidentiality of sources.'' Schieffer was responding to a 60 Minutes II report last week that referenced memos allegedly...

It appears likely that CBS News based a blockbuster report on George W. Bush's National Guard service on faked documents. If so, either through negligence or malfeasance, it has attempted to perpetuate a gross fraud on the American public. In its defenses aired so far, it has been evasive and downright misleading. Needless to say, this is not the work of a reputable news division. The strategy that now makes most sense from the perspective of the selfish interests of those responsible at CBS is to batten down the hatches and hope the document flap blows over and is eventually...

On the CBS Sunday show, after Friedman & Schieffer's somewhat contentious interview with Don Rumsfeld, it sounded like Schieffer started to say something like, "Mr. Secretary, you're always a worthy adversary." Did anyone else catch that? For the record, he ended up saying something like, "Mr. Secretary, you're always a worthy adv...ocate for your cause." Nice save, Bobby!

Two contrarian moments: First, on Friday’s Today, Matt Lauer noted how “people are saying” that President Bush is “igniting the cultural wars” with his stand on gay marriage, “but back in 1996, when President Clinton, a Democrat, signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as the union, the legal union between one man and one woman, no one said he was igniting cultural wars.” Second, on Sunday’s Face the Nation, Bob Schieffer pointed out that “even if” Democrats manage to “kill the President's tax cuts, there still won't be enough money to pay” the currently planned Social Security...

On Sunday's Face the Nation, at the start of a segment on President Bush's National Guard duty, CBS's Bob Schieffer said he was "surprised, frankly," that the Guard story "has gone on as long as it has." As if he had no control over the subject matters addressed on his own show. But neither Schieffer, nor his guests on the topic, Time's Karen Tumulty and Boston Globe reporter Walter Robinson, went so far as Meet the Press panelist Roger Simon of U.S. News who remarked that, as opposed to Bush taking the nation to war, "nobody died when Bill Clinton...

January 18, 2004, 7:30 A.M. PST on Face the Nation, CBS-TV – I have been hard on Bob Schieffer before. The reason is always the same. It is the same reason this time. There he sat in Iowa, talking to Senator John Edwards, who clams to be surging because his positive message reflects his small town connection with the “people.”...(snip) The reason the White House and congress is in Republican hands today, and the reason the former Democrat registration majority of 51% has shrunk to 31% is that in the past ten years a gigantic town hall has been created...
