Republican leaders have agreed to stick to the higher spending levels President Obama is seeking as House Republicans released a $1.07 trillion blueprint Tuesday that is already spurring a feverish backlash among conservatives. Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price, Georgia Republican, said the budget is more conservative in future years, imposing limits on ballooning Medicaid spending, shifting control of the food stamp program to states and forcing major changes to Medicare. But conservatives say the 2017 discretionary spending number is too high and Republicans should have fought to cut some $30 billion from the plan. The fight is shaping up as...

House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) suggested Tuesday night that he could reach for the Republican presidential nomination during a contested convention in Cleveland.

The icy relationship between Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump and Republican leaders in Congress may be starting to thaw. Both House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Tuesday discussed having positive phone conversations with Trump after weeks of refusing to even mention the business mogul by name. In both cases, Trump picked up the phone first. "Donald Trump called this morning and we had a good conversation," McConnell told reporters Tuesday. "I appreciated his call."

(R-Wis.) reiterated Tuesday that he would support Donald Trump if he wins the GOP nomination, even as the Speaker called on the party’s front-runner to tone down his rhetoric amid a spate of violence at recent campaign rallies. For a second day in a row, Ryan condemned “people on the left” who have tried to disrupt Trump events. But he also made clear that presidential candidates have a responsibility for the type of environment they create at their campaign events.

Are we be better off today with the thousands of U.S. factories that have shut down and millions of American jobs lost and the trillions in accumulated debt that we've run up in the last couple decades of free trade? And, of course, this is due to many factors including such things as: Big government Regulations High taxes Unions driving up costs Cheap labor overseas Fewer regulations overseas Lower taxes overseas Trade deficits etc., And doubly exasperated by poor trade deals? Or is this all a myth? Are we better off with cheaper foreign (cheap) goods, fewer U.S. factories, fewer...

You probably never heard about this but in December, House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) successfully pushed through Congress his $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill that will also fund visas for nearly 300,000 more Muslim migrants over the next 12 months. Breitbart The omnibus bill also funded sanctuary cities, illegal alien tax credits, and changed federal law to allow for a massive increase in low-skilled H-2B workers– an immigration expansion opposed by more than nine in ten GOP voters. Yet at the first gathering of all House Republicans since the omnibus’s passage, Politico reports that GOP lawmakers gave Ryan a...

Less than a week after House Speaker Paul Ryan went after Republican front-runner Donald Trump for failing to disavow David Duke and the KKK, the former vice presidential nominee has spoken over the phone with the controversial candidate about developing a Republican agenda. And in addition to Trump, Ryan, R-Wis., has also spoken to Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, "to explain House Republicans' plan to present a bold conservative policy agenda this year," the speaker's press secretary, AshLee Strong, told NBC News Monday. Speaker Ryan also plans to have similar calls with Republican presidential candidates Florida Senator Marco...

With U.S. Republicans sharply split over a front-runner they cannot unite behind, a new group is trying to push the country's top elected Republican, Paul Ryan, into the White House race.
-
Panicked Republicans question whether Mr. Trump will be able to unite a Republican-controlled Congress that would normally be expected to promote and promulgate his agenda, an internal crisis nearly unheard-of in a generation of American politics. On nearly every significant issue, Mr. Trump stands in opposition to Republican orthodoxy and his party’s policy prescriptions — the very ideas that Mr. Ryan has done more than anyone else to form, refine or promote over the last decade.

Republicans in Washington are coming to grips with the increasing likelihood that Donald Trumpwill be their presidential nominee. It's a scenario few would have taken seriously last summer, when Trump jumped into the race against what Republicans believed was their strongest presidential field in decades. But the real estate mogul has nearly vanquished them all, winning three out of the first four contests by double-digit margins while leaving his closest remaining rivals -- Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas) -- in the dust. With surveys putting him ahead in most of the states set to vote in next...

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday the rise of Donald Trump can be explained by voters being fed-up that America is on the wrong track. Ryan blamed the progressive policies of President Barack Obama. "You have conservatives, like myself, ... who are very upset about the direction of the country," Ryan told "Squawk Box" on CNBC. "You have people in America panicked because they have economic anxiety." As House speaker, Ryan is not supporting any one candidate as the nomination contests continue. "There's nothing we can do about what's going on in the presidential election and what the outcome of...

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Wednesday said the selection of 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee Paul D. Ryan was the "end" of the campaign for Republicans because of the perceptions surrounding Mr. Ryan and entitlement spending. "Every single other candidate is going to cut the hell out of your Social Security," Mr. Trump said in response to a question about the program at an event in South Carolina. "Remember the wheelchair being pushed over the cliff when you had Ryan chosen as your vice president? That was the end of that campaign, by the way, when they chose Ryan,"...

At his weekly press briefing on Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan would not say if he supports congressional action to roll back or restrict the military's use of women in combat roles. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has ordered the armed services to open all combat roles in the U.S. military to women. "There will be no exceptions," Carter said at a Dec. 3 press conference. ...

Paul Ryan is hosting a fundraising retreat in Palm Beach, Florida this week that is drawing a number of major donors - in addition to the House speaker's 2012 running mate. Mitt Romney was among those who addressed the confab on Thursday, according to two sources present. Also speaking were two former 2016 GOP contenders, Scott Walker and Lindsey Graham. The group gathered at the posh Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa. Unlike his predecessor John Boehner, Ryan is not known for his prodigious fundraising skills. But he is taking steps to expand his network. The new House speaker recently...

President Obama’s last year in office is shaping up as the Year of the Veto.

After vetoing only seven bills over the first seven years of his presidency, Mr. Obama has vetoed two measures already in January. What’s more, the White House has issued veto threats against all five pieces of legislation to come out of the House since Jan. 1, from a measure to cut “burdensome†government regulations to a bill that would give Congress greater oversight of the Iranian nuclear deal. A House vote on the latter is scheduled for the week of Feb. 1.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said he hasn't yet met face-to-face with President Obama during his tenure as speaker, but plans to meet with him in early 2016. 'We're going to have one heck of a contrast in 2016,' he said.

Paul Ryan enters his first full year as speaker of the House with a unified caucus, an ambitious agenda, and an audacious goal: Go on offense against President Obama and the Democratic party, while laying the predicate for unified Republican control of government in 2017. “We have no clue who our nominee is going to be,†Ryan tells me over the phone, “and the last thing we should do is sit around and wait.†Ryan says he learned in 2012 that Republicans should make the case for their policies as quickly and as forcefully as possible. “We can’t sit around...

On Wednesday, Senate Democrats successfully and predictably blocked what many conservatives described as Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) 56% 's "Show Vote'"on refugee admissions. It has been called a show vote because the Ryan plan, even if the President signed it, would still allow the President to bring in an unlimited number of refugees from an unlimited number of countries. Democrats' filibuster on the motion to proceed to Ryan's show vote comes one month after Speaker Ryan sent President Obama a blank check to fund visa issuances to nearly 300,000 (temporary and permanent) Muslim migrants in the next 12 months alone....
