Harvard: July 4th Parades Are Right-Wing By Paul BedardPosted: June 30, 2011 Democratic political candidates can skip this weekend's July 4th parades. A new Harvard University study finds that July 4th parades energize only Republicans, turn kids into Republicans, and help to boost the GOP turnout of adults on Election Day."Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation's political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party," said the report from Harvard See political cartoons about the 2012 GOP field.]"The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and...

If Rick Perry enters the presidential race, look for him and Michele Bachmann to duke it out. [snip] The obvious danger for Bachmann and Perry is that they might move too far to the right in trying to outflank each other. In that case, whoever wins the one-on-one game could realize only a Pyrrhic victory—unable to make a convincing case that he or she could attract enough moderate voters to defeat Obama. So the question for Bachmann and Perry may be less about how conservative they are and more about where they will end up after fighting it out among...

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) has another Democratic challenger: a 28-year-old accountant who is making his first run for public office. Patrick Murphy started a campaign site this week and put out a video welcome message, outlining his case for election. "I love my country. I love South Florida, and I'm not going to stand by while right-wing extremists like Allen West continue to divide us," he said. Murphy is considered a dark-horse candidate in the race. A handful of other Democrats are considering getting into the race against West — one of two black Republican members of Congress elected in...

Over the weekend, The Daily Caller’s Jeff Poor reported on Bill Maher’s seemingly inscrutable opinion of Stalin as a “right winger.” Stalin was a communist, which is left wing, but his methods were so brutal and evil, Maher could only conclude Stalin was so far left, he was to the right. Poor’s article did not go into Maher’s tortured reasoning, which reveals a fundamental flaw in the collectivist dogma. Like many of his ilk, Maher views politics on a scale of interest and identity alignment – left vs. right, Dem vs. GOP. Since these are all measures of serving men...

The Democratic Leadership Council, a proud and sometimes belligerent group that sought to steer Democratic policy toward the right, will reportedly cease its operations. The D.L.C. was formed in 1985, in the wake of Walter Mondale’s 18-point, 49-state defeat to Ronald Reagan. The group played off concerns that the Democratic Party had been taken over by interest groups and was doomed to nominate candidates like the liberal Mr. Mondale instead of more moderate, and presumably more electable, ones. Indeed, at the time the D.L.C. was established, the Democrats had lost four of the prior five presidential elections. The connection that...

That is definitely the only conclusion you can come up with if you read most of the news-op-eds-opinion columns in Spanish in general and in the Hispanic media in the U.S. in particular. Through out the weekend and today, I read the news about the despicable act committed by Jared Lee Loughner . I evaluated the news both in Spanish and English to see if there was any difference between them. Now, if any of you have been following the opinions of the main-stream media you know that most of them were blaming talk radio, right wing bloggers, Tea-Party followers,...

  • Left vs. Right Question - Nazis were rightwing?

    10/25/2010 12:53:38 PM PDT · by Feline_AIDS · 92 replies
Periodically I come to this same conundrum when I encounter people who attach the terms "Nazis" and "rightwing." I read Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism, and from what I can gather, he is saying that the Nazis were socialists and nationalists at the same time, meaning they were nationalistic enough to be considered rightwing, even though they were on the left economically (and socially). A third way, not meeting in the middle--more like bending the spectrum backward so the two ends meet. Could someone explain this curious part of the political spectrum? Because Goldberg explains that nationalism was mostly a leftie...

Italy is set to become the next European country to ban the burka after a government report ruled in favour of the proposed legislation. MPs from the anti-immigration Northern League party, a member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s ruling right wing coalition, have presented the proposal in a bill.

Britain could import the ‘insurgency’ tactics of the ‘Tea Party’ movement where government attempts to impose higher taxes have led to mass protests and threatened to derail conventional politics. The UK-based Taxpayers Alliance held talks with the FreedomWorks movement at a conference for right wing campaign groups in London. A new wave of ‘Tea Party’ protests, named after the uprising against the British state’s imposition of tax on tea imports to America in 1773, has swept the U.S. in the last 18 months. One million activists have marched on Washington to demand lower taxes. But the movement has also fielded...

Shortly after the terrible attacks on 9/11 Bin Laden released a video where he stated his ultimate goal is to bring down the United States of America. Now in the long-term aftermath of 9/11 we are witnessing challenges to our society that we would not be facing were it not for the ideological war declared against us. One of the more obvious affects is the depletion our national treasures by financing the massive military response to the attacks. However, as uncomfortable as this may be to all of us, the monetary challenges are minor in light of the real threats...

It is not entirely clear what possessed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to disclose his peculiar suspicions that a yet-to-be-apprehended terrorist could very well turn out to be a right-wing enthusiast driven to violence because of his strong disagreement with President Obama's health care plan. What the consequences would have been had his suspicions proved accurate we cannot now predict, since said miscreant has already confessed. It turns out that he is, after all, merely another SUV-driving, stand-by Islamic jihadist commissioned to bring the war on terror to our shores. Yet amidst the ensuing fray of speculations about whether...

Various politicians and members of the media blamed the "right-wing" for the failed New York car bomb terrorist attack, now they are afraid of "racism" against Muslims. Monday, May 3, 2010: Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY): "Whether the guy who did this, or the people who did this were with some Islamic terrorist group or whether they were some right-wing nut group or whether they were by themselves, in one sense it doesn't matter." In an interview with The New York Times, former President Bill Clinton blasted the Tea Party protestors last week, calling them “a bigger threat to the government than al-Qaeda ever could be.” “No matter how many millions of Americans al-Qaeda might kill, unless President Obama and Congress are among the victims these Islamists will never bring down the United States Government,” Clinton insisted. “The Tea Partiers, on the other hand, represent a very real threat. It is conceivable that they could overturn the Democratic majority in Congress this November and might even succeed in defeating the President’s bid for a...

Barney Frank is calling a Twitter post by conservative commentator Laura Ingraham a "false story" that exemplifies what he called the "right-wing technique of spreading a lie," WCVB TV is reporting. Ingraham posted a message on her Twitter account that reads "Sources tell me Bawney Fwank (sic) won't run for re-election. Wants to work on the board of a bank and make $ before retirement." As Hungary prepares to vote in a crucial election, the far-Right Jobbik party expects great success - to the consternation of democrats and those old enough to remember the fascist past. The rally in a school hall in the normally sleepy town of Dunakeszi was packed with hundreds of supporters. They cheered as Mr Vona promised to rid Hungary of corruption and crack down on foreign interests. He spoke about stopping Roma, the country's biggest ethnic minority, from sponging off the state - forcing anyone claiming benefits to perform public service in return. He promised to "give back Hungary's national...
