This year marks the 50th anniversary of president Richard Nixon’s historic trip to China. This trip is widely recognized as the moment China entered the world stage. There is a common belief among global affairs savants that Nixon made a grave mistake. In reality, however, his logic was sound, and his international policies should still serve as a guiding light. It is undeniable that China is participating in genocide and atrocities on a scale not seen in decades. China is systematically removing and erasing its Uighur population, killing dissidents, and pushing for a monolithic nation that includes Taiwan. Blaming this...

A measure to enshrine abortion as a “fundamental right” in the state constitution of Michigan has been projected to become law following Tuesday’s vote. Meretz minister Esawi Frej says Labor leader Merav Michaeli’s ‘delusions of grandeur’ brought about the center-left’s electoral downfall Left-wing politicians were reacting with horror and dismay on Wednesday to the decisive electoral victory of the right-wing, religious bloc in the general election, expressing extreme concern in particular over the strong influence the far-right Religious Zionism party will likely wield in the next government. And recriminations among left-wing parties for their poor showing in the election had also begun, with Regional Cooperation Minister Esawi Frej of the Meretz party blaming the leader of the Labor party, Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli, for...

President Joe Biden on Monday claimed progress on bringing inflation down, even as the cost of groceries keeps rising. “We’re seeing hopeful signs of progress on inflation as well,” Biden said, adding that “inflation eased in July.” Biden spoke about inflation during a speech at Boston’s Logan airport on Monday afternoon. He celebrated falling gas prices but did not mention the rising cost of groceries. He insisted that Americans should trust him to handle the issue of inflation, calling it his “top economic priority.” “The American people should have confidence that we’re on the right track, that we’re seeing real...

Morning Consult has reported five years’ worth of data from over 8.6 million participants that shows a trend of America’s registered voters moving steadily to the ideological right. “The left is losing the battle for the minds of the American electorate, Morning Consult research shows, with voters decreasingly identifying as liberal in recent years,” writes Morning Consult political reporter Eli Yokley. “But that doesn’t mean the country is lurching to the right.”Yokley then makes an effort to pretend the trend isn’t what it looks like: “Instead, an increase in the share of Americans who identify as moderate, or who are...

Hello Everybody! Last night I welcomed comedian and long-time friend Marc Yaffee to my Old School LIVE show. I called the episode “FRIENDS Who DISAGREE.” While I really appreciate Marc coming on, and think he did a great job, I felt most of the way through the show that I wasn’t doing such a great job myself! But what do you do–it’s Live–and as much as I may want to, I’m not going to edit my less than stellar moments out (it would have taken me all night!). And I got some friendly, yet critical feedback from a good friend....

Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise address at the funeral for a victim of the Buffalo, N.Y., supermarket shooting on Saturday, saying such violent acts will not stop America from speaking out. “I think we all know that a true measure of strength is not based on who you beat down. It’s based on who you lift up,” Harris said at the funeral for victim Geraldine Chapman Talley.

J.D. Vance’s victory in Tuesday night’s Ohio Republican Senate primary is an important and hopeful sign for the future of the GOP. After Trump’s loss in 2020, some were eager for a reversion to the comfortable platitudes of the pre-Trump days. “We can’t let [Trump] define us for the future,” said Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, “because that would just further divide our country, and it would hurt our Republican Party.” Trumpism frightened members of the Old Guard who saw it as their duty to protect the “principled conservative” brand. The Old Guard and the Never Trumpers hoped that all that...

MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough doubled down on suggesting the leak of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning the Roe v. Wade ruling was from someone on the right. Scarborough argued that the “right-wing noise machine always churns into overdrive” when the U.S. Supreme Court comes into play about topics like abortion, which is why he said so many Republicans had accused someone on the left of being the leaker.

What can we learn from Elon Musk’s apparent shift to the right in his politics? From his perspective, as illustrated in his stick figure tweet , he has not shifted at all. Instead, the left has veered further left, because of which, by remaining stationary in his own views, it is perceived that he has moved to the right. His graphic reminded me of an illustration I used for many years while preaching, holding the Bible high in my right hand and using my left hand to represent the state of the society. I would then say this: “Because we...

The Nation justice correspondent Elie Mystal said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” that the Christian right wants religious freedom to be bigoted against the LGBTQ community. The panel was discussing the Supreme Court, who seems inclined to rule for a Washington state high school football coach who lost his job after he refused to stop praying on the field after games.

Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving is standing his ground over his decision not to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Irving, who made his season debut Jan. 5, told reporters after practice Friday he still believes he made the "right decision" despite pushback he received over his decision to remain unvaccinated. "I can really say that I stood firm on what I believed in, what I wanted to do with my body. That should be not just an American right, that should be a human right," Irving said. "And when you stand for something like that, in a society that we’re in...

The difference between negative vs positive rights is that one requires action while the other requires inaction. Negative rights are the requirements of someone else not to interfere in your ability to obtain something. Positive rights are a requirement of someone else to provide you with something. You may hear negative rights referred to as “liberties,” and that’s because they are basic human and civil rights stating that no one can interfere with our right to obtain something through trade or bartering. Positive rights are often called “entitlements” because they are things that someone must provide to us, whether we’ve...

From the Book: "The Democrats are fundamentally transforming our nation by using a plan that is so clever that the conservatives do not recognize their compliance with the poisonous design. Their tactic is brilliant. They have us arguing over the political left and right, conservative versus liberal, tolerance, intolerance, rights, race, civil rights or privileges, benefits and fairness while they engage in a continual drone that we are a democracy instead of a republic. The bickering has directed our attention to party politics instead of working from our constitutional foundation, which is allowing our government’s decay into fascism, communism, or...

Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) “has been right for a long time” when she is criticizing fellow Republicans. Anchor Dana Bash said, “You talked several times during this interview about the world seeing the difference between good and evil. I want to bring that closer to home and talk about something that Congresswoman Liz Cheney tweeted yesterday about sitting Republican House Members appearing at a white nationalist gathering. She said, quote, ‘As Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar speak at this white supremacist, anti-semitic, pro-Putin against, silence...

Whoopi Goldberg told her co-host Wednesday on ABC’s “The View” that a majority on the right thinking that President Vladimir Putin was a strong leader contradicted not wanting the U.S. government to require wearing a mask as part of COVID restrictions. Tuesday on the Fox News Channel, Tucker Carlson said, “Why do I hate Putin so much? Has Putin ever called me a racist? Has he threatened to get me fired for disagreeing with him?… Does he eat dogs? These are fair questions, and the answer to all of them is no. Vladimir Putin didn’t do any of that. So...

For many years—most of my politically cognizant life, in fact—I felt secure in my politics. Truth and justice, I believed, leaned leftward. If you were some version of a decent human being, you cared about those less fortunate than you, which meant that you supported a whole host of measures designed to even the playing field a little. Sometimes, these measures had unintended consequences (see under: Stalin, Josef), but that wasn’t reason enough to despair of the long march to equality. Besides, there was hardly an alternative: On the other end of the political transom lurked despicable creeps, right-wing orcs...

When “the left” becomes the party of wealthy elites and state security agencies who preach racial division, state censorship, contempt for ordinary citizens and for the U.S. Constitution, and telling people what to do and think at every turn, then that’s the side you are on, if you are “on the left”—those are the policies and beliefs you stand for and have to defend. It doesn’t matter what good people “on the left” believed and did 60 or 70 years ago. Those people are dead now, mostly. They don’t define “the left” anymore than Abraham Lincoln defines the modern-day Republican...

Former Vice President Mike Pence said he believes he “did the right thing” when he certified the results of the 2020 presidential election in January, ignoring then-President Trump’s repeated requests that he object to the vote. Pence, in an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network that is set to air on Thursday, said that “in my heart of hearts” he knows he did the right thing on Jan. 6. He added that despite some concerns he had with the vote, his oath of office required him to protect and defend the constitution, which he believes he did by going against Trump’s...
