U.S. government recommends uninstalling software after security holes discovered If you’re still using Apple’s QuickTime on a Windows PC, it’s time to stop. Apple confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that it is no longer supporting or updating the 11-year-old QuickTime 7 for Windows, and has posted instructions for uninstalling the software. Keeping it installed on your computer may pose a risk. Last week, researchers discovered two new security holes that could allow bad guys to create malicious files to launch within Apple’s media player. Trend Micro, the security research firm that found the vulnerability, said that it hasn’t yet...

  • How do I get rid of Quicktime?

    11/01/2008 5:59:54 PM PDT · by ml/nj · 39 replies · 1,310+ views
I stupidly downloaded and installed Quicktime on my XP PC so I could view the Piel Bros Commercials someone linked to today. Quicktime insists on being started automatically when I boot and I don't want this. So I removed (via Control Panel) the Quicktime program. Still I got warnings that Quicktime was trying to insert itself in my Startup list, so I searched for everything with "Quick" in the filename and got rid of those. I rebooted. I'm still getting warnings that Quicktime wants to insert itself in my Startup list. The only other thing I can think of is...

Apple on Thursday released Security Update 2006-003, fixing vulnerabilities in Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server. In addition to fixing core technologies, the update also includes changes to several of the company's applications. An issue with Apple's Safari Web browser running in Mac OS X 10.4 that allowed an automatically expanded archive containing a symbolic link to be moved to the user's desktop and launched has been fixed in this update. Apple Mail received two fixes. The first deals with the handling of invalid color information in enriched text email messages that could cause the allocation and initialization...

Tom Ferris, an independent security researcher, has provided more details on a security flaw in Apple Computer's popular iTunes and QuickTime software that could put systems running Windows and Mac OS X at risk of attack. He first disclosed the flaw in early December. An attacker could commandeer a vulnerable computer by tricking a user into opening a malicious ".mov"...

Apple Computer late Thursday issued an alert about flaws in its QuickTime media player that could allow a malicious attacker to launch a denial-of-service attack or remote code execution. QuickTime versions 6.5.2 and 7.0.1 for the Mac OS X operating system are affected by the vulnerabilities, as well as some versions for Microsoft Windows, according to a Friday report by security company Secunia, which rated the vulnerabilities "highly critical." Apple has issued an update, QuickTime 7.0.3, to fix the four flaws. The patch was posted to Apple's Web site on Oct. 12. One vulnerability can result in a denial-of-service, or...

Podcasts are so last month. If you want to get in on the hip trip, you’ll turn your attention (and camcorder) to vodcasts—Video-On-Demand-casts, that is. No, this isn’t stuff of the future. By following the steps I’m about to outline you can create and distribute a downloadable vodcast today. The technology behind vodcasting is the same as the magic that makes up podcasting—RSS. By preparing your movies properly and creating the right feed, you can offer your audience video on demand through an application familiar to us all: iTunes 4.9, a version of iTunes that supports playback of local and...

  • New security vulnerability threatens Tiger

A security vulnerability in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger allows a malicious .mov file to leak information to an external host. The exploit, which was discovered by David Remahl in Sweden, takes advantage "compositions," which have access to powerful tools known as "patches." Combining patches that provide advanced system information with patches that load information from the Internet allows an embedded .mov file to leak system details. A temporary workaround includes disabling the QuickTime plug-in and treating Quartz Composer files with suspicion. An alternative workaround involves disabling QTZ support in QuickTime by removing QuartzComposer.rcomponent in the QuickTime section of the...
