As I watch the election cycle with PACs and Super PACs and the never ending spin of paid consultants, who have no loyalty to our constitution, I have a modest proposal for Freeperdom to consider. How about restricting donations to political campaigns only to those who can vote for the candidate? If we did this, it takes out the corruption and brings back the citizen politician. I have heard this idea kicked about by a few of my friends. Is there anyone else who thinks this is a good idea. Or, do other Freepers know why this could be a...

FIRST, USA NATIONAL swimmer Matt Grevers won a gold medal in the Missouri Grand Prix. Then, he proposed to his girlfriend and swim teammate from the medal podium. Grevers dropped to his knee in front of TV cameras and cheering fans to ask Annie Chandler – who had just congratulated him on his win – to marry him. He was helped along the way by his elder brother, who sneaked him the diamond ring while he stood on the stand.

President Obama's proposal to severely restrict "deferral" will cause a significant tax increase on American companies trying to earn market share in other nations. For all intents and purposes, the White House plan is protectionism, but the target is American companies rather than their foreign rivals. This Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation video explains why this misguided policy will reduce exports from America and reduce jobs in America. ANDECHS, Germany (AFP) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday that 2022 was "a good time" for Germany to end nuclear power, backing a proposal by the Bavarian wing of her party. ... Following the earthquake and tsunami which wrecked the Japanese nuclear plant of Fukushima in March, Merkel ordered the closure for three months of Germany's seven oldest reactors. She also announced a moratorium for the same period of an earlier decision by her government to extend the lifetime of Germany's 17 reactors by an average of 12 years.

This romantic had clearly put in a lot of effort to propose to his girlfriend. He had picked out the ring, rehearsed a song, practised a touching speech and had even took his beloved back to the place where they met so he could pop the question. But as he met her outside a fast food shop in a shopping mall, perhaps he should have guessed that getting down on bended knee in front of whooping shoppers might not strike quite the right note. He is joined by a guitarist, who accompanies him as he bursts into song, serenading the...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lenders would be required to make sure prospective borrowers have the ability to repay their mortgages before giving them a loan, under a proposal released by the Federal Reserve on Tuesday. The rule, which is required by the Dodd-Frank financial reform law, is intended to tighten lending standards and combat home lending abuses that contributed to the 2007-2009 financial crisis. The rule would establish minimum underwriting standards for most mortgages and lenders could be sued by the borrower if they do not take the proper steps to check a borrowers ability to repay the loan. The law...

In which the President of the United States uncorks one bald, falsifiable claim after another regarding his calamitous budget proposal: "[My budget] puts us on a path to pay for what we spend by the middle of the decade." To the average American, that sounds like we'll balance the nation's ledger within five years. If you parse the sentence carefully, though, you'll notice that the president only makes the questionable claim that his blueprint will "put us on a path" toward that goal -- which it never comes close to achieving. I'm once again compelled to quote ABC News' Jake...

The marriage proposal was apparently a rather romantic affair. On Christmas Eve, the couple watched a late-night movie together and then exchanged gifts: for him a framed photograph of their King Charles Spaniel, for her an engagement ring. ‘She burst into tears,’ he revealed on Twitter at the weekend. ‘This is the happiest Christmas in memory.’ ‘The most memorable Christmas ever,’ she tweeted in agreement. ‘I love him.’ All of which might be rather more touching if the prospective groom was not Playboy tycoon Hugh Hefner who, at 84, is 60 years older than his fiancée, a platinum blonde model...

Proposal: Presidential Candidates Submit Handwritten Copy of Constitution Posted on September 9, 2010 at 5:27pm by Jonathon M. Seidl What if the president had to hand-write a copy of the Constitution before he took office? That’s the question Dr. David Corbin and Dr. Matthew Parks of The King’s College-New York City are asking. Corbin is an associate professor of politics, while Parks is the assistant provost. According to them, the presidential oath “to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States” is one that should be taken very seriously. But “you can’t do this if you don’t know...

If she takes up swimming again, she won't be able to wear her engagement ring in the pool - she'd surely sink. Prince Albert of Monaco has proposed to South African former swimmer Charlene Wittstock - giving her a ring that more than makes up for his reputation as an eternal playboy. The royal palace said in a statement that the engagement was announced today between the 52-year-old prince and 32-year-old Wittstock.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knoxville man was minutes from proposing to his girlfriend on a hike in Western North Carolina Friday when she was struck and killed by lightning. "Everything went black. I was spun 180 degrees, thrown several feet back. My legs turned to jelly. My shoes were smoking and the bottom of my feet felt like they were on fire," Richard Butler said. For a moment, he said he thought he was the only one hit by the bolt of lightning. However, it was his girlfriend Bethany Lott, 25, who took the direct hit. She was hiking just...

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) - Proposed legislation would impose the death penalty for some gay Ugandans, and their family and friends could face up to seven years in jail if they fail to report them to authorities. Even landlords could be imprisoned for renting to homosexuals. Gay rights activists say the bill, which has prompted growing international opposition, promotes hatred and could set back efforts to combat HIV/AIDS. They believe the bill is part of a continentwide backlash because Africa's gay community is becoming more vocal. "It's a question of visibility," said David Cato, who became an activist after he was...
