Edward Burke Jr. was arrested at his home in Winnetka after a family member told police he pushed her and authorities reported finding him “highly intoxicated” and “belligerent.” But by the end of the next business day, the domestic battery charge had been dropped. The swift reversal occurred after the accused man — the son of Edward Burke, Chicago’s longest-serving alderman who is now charged with attempted extortion — managed to get his case before a Cook County judge, apparently without the assistance of an attorney and despite the fact he wasn’t due in court for another week. The arrest...

The Baltimore City school board voted unanimously to oppose a measure that would have allowed school police officers to carry weapons during the day. The school board’s vote effectively kills HB31, which would have overturned a previous prohibition on school police officers carrying guns in schools. Del. Cheryl D. Glenn, a Democrat who sponsored the bill, said she would be withdrawing the proposed legislation from the General Assembly. “I can’t move a bill that doesn’t have the support of the school board and the mayor,” she said. “The votes wouldn’t be there.” The 10-0 opposition vote took place at a...

Medical examiners in New York have ruled that the mysterious deaths of two sisters found dead and duct taped together on the banks of the Hudson River was a double suicide. The cause of death was drowning. The bodies of Rotana Ferea, 23 and Tala Farea, 16 were discovered on October, 24 2018 near the George Washington Bridge. They were quickly identified as Saudi citizens who had gone missing from a shelter-like facility, possibly for abused women, in Fairfax, Virginia in August. I could have been detained and required to provide breath samples for doing nothing more than purchasing a bottle of alcohol from a government store while perfectly sober As I wrote in an earlier article, new laws concerning drinking and driving came into effect in Canada on Dec. 18. As well as increased penalties, cops no longer have to have a “reasonable suspicion” that a driver has been drinking before demanding that driver provide suitable breath samples. As well, a police officer can demand someone provide breath samples if that person has driven anytime within the previous two hours. If...

Two more police officers have been shot in the line of duty. That makes 3 killed by gunfire, 4 killed with cars, and 2 more remain in critical condition after being shot. That is JUST this year and it's ONLY January. When is enough, enough? When will the rest of us get tired of our "front line" being killed because of the job they do and the uniform they wear? The time is long past due for "we the people" to decide that criminals should NOT be mollycoddled, their rights encased in solid gold while ours and those of police...
