HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Harry Hubbard Johnson, who recently left the employ of trainer Steve Asmussen at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., committed suicide Friday in Kentucky. Johnson was Asmussen’s shed foreman, a position that ranks a level below assistant trainer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering adopting new regulations for zoos at the request of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that would require “humane” treatment for bears. The proposed rules would mandate the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to hire a “bear expert,” prohibit bear pits, and require rules so bears are not “stressed, frustrated, and bored.” PETA, which killed 1,792 stray cats and dogs in 2013, first petitioned the USDA to adopt its rules in 2012. The agency began accepting comments on its petition last November, and extended the comment period on Monday.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — An animal rights advocate wants to place a roadside memorial in Georgia to remember several chickens killed in a highway wreck. A member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed an application for the memorial Wednesday with the Georgia Department of Transportation.
