Ancient microbial life on Mars could have destroyed the planet’s atmosphere through climate change, which ultimately led to its extinction, new research has suggested. The new theory comes from a climate modeling study that simulated hydrogen-consuming, methane-producing microbes living on Mars roughly 3.7 billion years ago. At the time, atmospheric conditions were similar to those that existed on ancient Earth during the same period. But instead of creating an environment that would help them thrive and evolve, as happened on Earth, Martian microbes may have doomed themselves just as they were getting started, according to the study published Oct. 10...

More than 1,600 civilians were killed in US-led coalition air and artillery strikes during the offensive to oust the Islamic State group from the Syrian city of Raqqa in 2017, activists say. Amnesty International and monitoring group Airwars said they had carried out investigations at 200 strike locations and identified 1,000 of the victims. They urged the coalition to "end almost two years of denial" about such deaths. The coalition says there were 180 civilian casualties in its campaign. Commanders say all feasible precautions to avoid civilian casualties were taken in those cases and that the decisions to strike complied...

Today’s Campaign Update (Because The Campaign Never Ends) Don’t go away mad, Brenda Snipes, just…well, you know the rest. – In what is a loss from which the dimwitted people of Broward County who kept re-electing her will never recover, Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes submitted her formal resignation on Sunday. It is hard to understand what could have possibly motivated this action on Snipes’s part, given her stellar reputation and the fact that she had performed so well in her job for so many years. Hah, hahahahahaha!!! Ok, I’m kidding. Seriously, is there anyone in America who needed firing...

US military confirms it is investigating what could be one of the worst incidents of civilian deaths by coalition forces At least 85 civilians, including almost a dozen children, have been killed after US air strikes targeted an area in northern Syria held by Islamic State (Isis/Daesh) fighters, a monitoring group has said. Some eight families were reportedly wiped out in the IS-controlled village of Tokhar near Manbij on Tuesday (19 July), in what could be one of the deadliest bombings of civilians by coalition forces since the start of operations in the country.

The McClatchy Co. reported today a 19.4 percent decline in November revenues compared with a year ago. Sacramento-based McClatchy, which owns The Bee, said advertising sales fell 22.4 percent from November 2007. Big declines in print ads were partly offset . . . Like other newspaper publishers, McClatchy is getting clobbered by the defection of business to the Internet and, increasingly, the recession.

Fox News Channel is getting out of the comedy game, canceling its news parody "The Half Hour News Hour" after a 15-episode run. Co-created by "24" producers Joel Surnow and Manny Coto, the show was an attempt to create a right-wing sendup of the news, a "Daily Show" for conservatives. The first episode, which featured guest appearances by Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham, beat its cable news competition and drew 1.4 million viewers, which qualifies for hit status on Sunday nights on Fox News Channel. But considerable buzz in the blogosphere and plugs on Limbaugh's show weren't enough to keep...

Part of archaeological site destroyed in Albuquerque ALBUQUERQUE Crews working on a waterline for a new high school on Albuquerque's west side have destroyed part of an archaeological site. A University of New Mexico archaeologist, Bruce Huckell, says the site is possibly up to ten-thousand-900 years old. He says the site was the first proof the presence of the Folsom culture in the Albuquerque basin. Pieces of tools, teeth and bone fragments have been found at the site, which was discovered by Huckell eight years ago. He says Albuquerque's public school district realized part of the site was damaged in...

Liz Taylor is facing death after her heart began to fail, it has been reported. The Oscar-winner, 74, is confined to her bedroom and has apparently planned her funeral. Insiders say the British-born star would like to be buried next to former husband Richard Burton. "Liz is inching closer to death every day and she knows it. It is not a pretty picture," a friend said. "She's not leaving a lot of money to her children. She wants the bulk of her fortune to go to AIDS research." Doctors say patients who suffer from such heart disease could hasten their...
