More than 1,600 civilians were killed in US-led coalition air and artillery strikes during the offensive to oust the Islamic State group from the Syrian city of Raqqa in 2017, activists say.
Amnesty International and monitoring group Airwars said they had carried out investigations at 200 strike locations and identified 1,000 of the victims.
They urged the coalition to "end almost two years of denial" about such deaths.
The coalition says there were 180 civilian casualties in its campaign.
Commanders say all feasible precautions to avoid civilian casualties were taken in those cases and that the decisions to strike complied with the law of armed conflict.

The truth is : These disgusting Jihadist scum commonly use civilian populations as human shields in the vain hope that their miserable lives will be spared from justice by hiding behind the burkha of women . The other truth is that most of the time to muslim civilian populations more-or-less willingly give themselves over to this role , do not resist and/ or stay in place , to be used as humans shields . Yes, they use civilians, non-combatants as human shields, and when considering such utter disregard for human life, such deprivation of heart and mind, such a societal seared conscience . . . we have read plenty now to see this all through Mohammedan history . . . this must not be allowed to propagate any further in the United States.

That is actually a pretty excellent record of minimizing civilian collateral deaths in an operation that size - and that is even given the fact that ISIS systematically used civilians as human shields.
No context is given on how the coalition took lots of time, effort, and even sacrificed some of their own lives to preserve the civilians, while ISIS deliberately endangered and even deliberately targeted them, in violation of the laws of war.
Who knows how many of these “civilians” were actually participating with ISIS? They used women and children as killers, as well as bomb makers, scouts and enforcers.
1,600 is still a low number, given the intensity and scale of that battle.

It’s a one gig image, so zoom in to the river, about center, 2/3 down. Zoom in to the two islands in the river and the north side river bank. That’s where the ISIS fighters made their last stand. Several compounds with multiple JDAM craters. Trapped between the bluffs and the river.
