  • NYT: Obama Willing to Pursue Solo Syria Strikes, Aides Say

NYTimes ^ | August 29, 2013 | MARK LANDLER, DAVID E. SANGER, THOM SHANKER and MARK MAZZETTI
WASHINGTON — President Obama is prepared to move ahead with a limited military strike on Syria, administration officials said on Thursday, even with a rejection of such action by Britain’s Parliament, an increasingly restive Congress, and lacking an endorsement from the United Nations Security Council. Although the officials cautioned that Mr. Obama had not made a final decision, all indications suggest that the strike could occur as soon as United Nations inspectors, who are investigating the Aug. 21 attack that killed hundreds of Syrians, leave the country. They are scheduled to depart Damascus, the capital, on Saturday. The White House...

US President Barack Obama has the authority to launch air strikes against Syria. But he has to notify lawmakers in Congress -- a process which has begun, according to both sides. "The administration is actively consulting with members of Congress, and we will continue to have these conversations in the days ahead," Kerry said Monday in a strongly-worded statement on Syria.

Obama can’t fix a problem he can’t see. No, you heard him right. At a press conference this morning, the President of the United States actually said, “The private sector is doing fine.” Mr. President, are you paying attention? Take off the rose-colored glasses. (Although, thanks to your fashion industry fundraising friends, I’m sure they’re very stylish rose-colored glasses.) The private sector is small businesses. It’s middle class families that run them. It’s entrepreneurs and start ups and job creators. And it’s not “doing fine.” Incomes are dropping, prices are rising, and the future is becoming more uncertain. Twenty-three million...

I have a hard time sifting through some of the news I find in the newspaper, some of the reports I hear on TV networks and cable, and much of what Congress and the Administration tells us on almost a daily basis. I find that what I hear and read doesn’t often seem plausible, that some of it is downright lies or misleading. Truth is like facts…stubborn stuff to ignore…therefore, to deceive, it has to be twisted or re-worded or hidden in order to put forth a message that the author wants to send. In this case, the authors are...

President Bush--sorry, President OBAMA has just finished his speech on the kinetic military action in Libya, and the early reviews are coming in. Obama's speech? It's bombing in DUmmieland! Too many are saying they've heard this speech before. Just substitute "Saddam" for "Qaddafi" and "Iraq" for "Libya," and Chimpy McBushitler could have given it. But of course there are some Obama/Democrat Party loyalists trying to spin this thing so as to placate the DUmmies. Chief among the apologists is, as you would expect, William Rivers Pitt, aka Will the Shill, loyal party hack, who is starting to tiptoe carefully...

"By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America ... there is established within the Executive Office of the President the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform." Thus begins the Executive Order signed by President Barack Obama on February 18, creating what is being called the Debt Commission. In his February 18 press conference announcing the new commission, President Obama stressed the need for such a body owing to the "severe fiscal crisis, brought on by years of bad habits in Washington." WASHINGTON, DC — White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs revealed to reporters today that President Barack Obama actively promoted the Catholic Health Association's public break with the American Catholic bishops to support his health care legislation. Gibbs also suggested that the CHA and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious' (LCWR) break with the U.S. Bishops has provided legitimate political cover for pro-life Democrats to switch their votes from "no" to "yes." Yesterday, Barack Obama was called to task by the Washington Post for his lack of availability to answer questions following the Christmas Day terrorist attack of Northwest Flight 253. While the president has read from a number of prepared statements regarding the incident over the past two weeks, he hasn't bothered to hold a forum in which the media could pose direct questions about it to him. The Post is rightfully dismayed and calls his cowardice towards the matter, "unfortunate". Speaking last night to the nation from the U.S. Military Academy, President Barack Obama said the war in Afghanistan is not lost and officially announced that he will send another 30,000 U.S. troops to fight it. The first new U.S. forces will join the fight by Christmas, he said, adding that U.S. forces will begin coming home in July 2011. Lt. Col. As Americans sit down to Thanksgiving dinner, President Barack Obama and his band of malcontent hippy czars are out there fomenting for revolution. Progressives they are not, given that some of those same czars were fomenting for revolution back in the 60s when a kid named Barry was still in red diapers, having come into this world in 1961, in Country Unknown. The little people gathering together at dining room tables all over America will be talking about revolution too. EL AVIV -- It's official. Iran has delivered its response to Washington's open-minded, well-intentioned efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the nuclear crisis. Tehran's five-page letter amounts to a joke, a mockery of the West, a nose-thumbing at Barack Obama, the United States and the international community. This means that in the months to come, Obama will likely face the most difficult and dangerous decision of his presidency. Obama's famous outstretched hand, his legendary oratorical skills, his faith in humanity proved insufficient to persuade the now-embattled and even more radicalized rulers of the Islamic Republic to get serious about...

Reports in the Polish media strongly suggest that the Obama Administration is about to abandon its plans for "third site" missile defense installations in Poland and the Czech Republic. Abandoning the third site would represent a huge turnaround in American strategic thinking on a global missile defense system and a massive betrayal of two key U.S. allies in Eastern and Central Europe. Such a move would also significantly weaken America's ability to combat the growing threat posed by Iran's ballistic missile program and would hand a major propaganda victory to Moscow. Why is it that when people want to describe particularly evil individuals or regimes, they use the terms “Nazi” or “Fascist” but almost never “Communist?” Given the amount the human suffering Communists have caused — 70 million killed in China, 20 to 30 million in the former Soviet Union and almost one-third of all Cambodians; the decimation of Tibetan and Chinese culture; totalitarian enslavement of North Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese and Russians; a generation deprived of human rights in Cuba; and much more — why is “Communist” so much less a term of revulsion than “Nazi?” There are Mao Restaurants in...

Watching the inauguration of President Barack Obama, I was impressed by the graciousness and civility by the two presidents at the platform during the transition. To tepid applause, Mr. Obama began his Inaugural Address by thanking George W. Bush for his service. As the camera panned to Mr. Bush, the 43rd president seemed non-responsive, sad. After the ceremony, the Obamas and Bushes slowly descended the Capitol steps together, almost arm in arm—two presidents and two first ladies, two couples, four Americans, four people. They chatted quietly, amicably. The Obamas escorted the Bushes to the helicopter. They hugged, shook hands, George...

Western powers gave Iran two weeks from July 19 to respond to their offer to hold off on imposing more U.N. sanctions on Iran if Tehran would freeze any expansion of its nuclear work. That would suggest a deadline of Saturday, although Russia, one of the six powers facing Iran, has opposed a deadline and Iran dismissed the...

ATLANTA - Three torched churches were discovered in Alabama Tuesday - the latest in a string of suspected arsons that damaged five churches in Bibb County. Investigators have not discovered any apparent motives. Four of the five churches in Bibb County - three of which burned to the ground - were white Baptist congregations. The other was black. Rather then tell the entire backstory, which you can read here and here, I'll make three points. 1. McCain's lobbying reform bill is incredibly weak compared to the Democrats "Honest Leadership Act." That's why only two Senate Democrats, Joe Lieberman and Bill Nelson, have signed on. 2. As Josh Marshall noted today, it was McCain who assured anxious Republicans that his Indian Affairs Committee investigation of Jack Abramoff wouldn't...
