The restoration of the Paris cathedral has reached a critical stage, in which steel beams need to be installed to stabilize the structure and a tower of scaffolding fused in the fire in April has to be removed. The scaffolding, which was erected before the blaze, must be treated for lead contamination before specialists—suspended aloft by ropes—can cut it away. Once this perilous step is complete, they will construct a temporary roof, called the “grand parapluie” (or large umbrella), over the nave. No final decision has yet been made about the design of the cathedral’s lost spire.

On Monday evening, the French Senate approved the government's Notre-Dame restoration bill - but added a clause that it must be restored to the state it was before the blaze, striking a blow to the government which had launched an international architecture competition to debate ideas on the restoration. The subject of the rebuilding of the cathedral - which was left badly damaged after fire tore through the roof and destroyed the spire on April 15 - has become a fraught battleground between traditionalists who want an exact restoration and others who favour a more imaginative take. Some of the...

The 37-year-old Indiana mayor — a graduate of Harvard and Oxford universities, Rhodes Scholar, Afghanistan veteran and musician — sent social media ablaze Monday night when he delivered a touching message to the people of France in the wake of the Notre Dame blaze — in fluent French. English and French are just two of seven languages that Buttigieg speaks. “To the people of France, I would like to say that Notre Dame cathedral was like a gift to the human species,” the Democrat told a reporter from the French station BFM TV at a fundraiser in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. “We...

FULL TITLE: All three of Notre Dame's Rose Windows SURVIVED blaze, Archbishop of Paris says, as first daylight images show inferno aftermath and criminal probe focuses on renovation experts Notre Dame's three medieval stained-glass windows all survived last night's devastating fire, the Archbishop of Paris has said, as detectives probe the renovation work which may have led to the blaze. The first daylight pictures inside the wreckage of the Paris landmark today showed the roof destroyed, the 850-year-old church exposed to the elements and the floor covered in charred debris. However the three 'irreplaceable' Rose Windows, which were last night...

I was on a train back into Paris this afternoon when I started receiving a number of messages on my phone asking if I had heard about Notre Dame. The roof was on fire, I was told, and it might be difficult to put out. But the first thought that came to mind was that all things happen by God's will or His permission. Nothing is random. Everything has a purpose. This was Monday of Holy Week. Could I help but think of Our Lord's words, "Weep not for me, but for your children"? Just yesterday in the liturgy Our...

Photos from inside Notre Dame show the central part of the historic Gothic cathedral still intact. Rows of wooden pews and much of the nave appears to have been saved, according to the images. “Only a small part of the vault collapsed. Interior seems relatively untouched. Hallelujah!” wrote @CathedralNotre.

While celebrities often turn to Twitter to argue politics and mock religion, they did something different on Monday: they joined in unison to weep for the destruction of a church – the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The world was shocked to watch as flames consumed the cathedral in Paris, France. Constructed in 1163, the historical and cultural landmark first reached completion in 1345. The blaze, which happened during Holy Week before Easter, hit the Catholic community especially hard. But with 13 million visitors per year, the gothic wonder exemplifies how beauty – beauty dedicated to God – draws in all peoples, regardless...

A French priest who helped comfort the wounded after the worst terrorist attack on Paris this century and who survived an ambush in Afghanistan today also emerged as a hero of the Notre Dame fire. Jean-Marc Fournier, chaplain of the Paris Fire Brigade, saved the Blessed Sacrament and the Crown of Thorns from the blazing cathedral on Monday night. It was feared that both religious artefacts would be lost as flames engulfed the medieval building, but Father Fournier made sure they were taken to safety. Etienne Loraillere, an editor for France's KTO Catholic television network, said Father Fournier 'went with...

The symbolism of the burning of Notre Dame Cathedral, the most renowned building in Western civilization, the iconic symbol of Western Christendom, is hard to miss. It is as if God Himself wanted to warn us in the most unmistakable way that Western Christianity is burning -- and with it, Western civilization. Every major Western (and one major non-Western) social and intellectual force has conspired to rid Europe of Christianity and the civilization it produced. Within the Western world, the French Enlightenment -- the intellectual basis of the French Revolution and the modern West -- sought to replace Christianity, and...

A Notre Dame cathedral priest has claimed that all precious artefacts and artwork have been saved from the historic building. In a tweet, French journalist Nicolas Delesalle cited Père Frédéric, writing: "Good news: all the works of art were saved. The treasure of the Cathedral is intact, the Crown of thorns, the Holy sacraments." The fire, which has destroyed destroyed large sections of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, has spread to one of the cathedral's landmark rectangular towers, according to Bloomberg. The historic building's spire and roof have already collapsed. No casualties have been reported as of yet. The...

A French journalist reports the art and sacred relics inside Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral have been saved as a massive fire rips through the more than 800-year-old church Monday evening. “Good news,” Paris Match reporter Nicolas Delesalle began. “All the works of art were saved. Delesalle, citing Father Frédéric, said the Crown of Thorns [pictured, above, during a ceremony in 2017], believed to be the wreath of thorns that was placed on the head of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion, was one of the priceless relics recovered from the blaze. At the time of publication, there had been no official...

PARIS — It took little more than an hour. In that amount of time, the spire had fallen, most of the roof had given way, and that was that. Notre Dame — the literal and figurative heart of Paris, the point from which all distances in the city are measured and the seemingly eternal backdrop to life in the French capital — was essentially no more. Granted, the facade was preserved, and the bell towers remain intact. But this is without question a story of loss on an otherwise perfect spring day. To have lived in Paris in recent years...

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith abruptly cut off an interview on Monday with a French commentator floating conspiracy theories about the fire burning at Notre Dame. Smith’s guest was French media analyst and former elected official Philippe Karsenty, who said the blaze burning at the Parisian landmark was "like a 9/11." ADVERTISEMENT "It’s like a 9/11. It’s a French 9/11. It’s a big shock," Karsenty said. "The church was there for more than 850 years. Even the Nazis didn't dare to destroy it." He said there have been churches "desecrated each and every week in France, all over France" in...

by Jenn Carter The media is circling the wagons over the Notre Dame fire, and even FoxNews has joined in the enforced groupthink. As I detailed in a prior article, the only explanation for Monday's monstrous fire and destruction of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is that it was a "construction accident." This, despite the fact that, as French police confirmed, there were no construction workers on-site at the time of the fire, and that there had been a series of arson attacks and desecration of other French churches in the past three months. But on all of...

On Friday Islamic terrorists Inez Madani was jailed for eight years for her attempted car bombing outside of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Madani was wounded with a knife in the belly of a police officer during the arrest in 2016. On Friday she was jailed for eight years in the attempted attack. ONE OF THREE women allegedly involved in a foiled plot in 2016 to blow up a car packed with gas canisters near the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris was today sentenced to eight years in prison by a French court for earlier offences. Ines Madani, 22, was...
