Posted on 05/28/2019 10:01:54 AM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege
On Monday evening, the French Senate approved the government's Notre-Dame restoration bill - but added a clause that it must be restored to the state it was before the blaze, striking a blow to the government which had launched an international architecture competition to debate ideas on the restoration.
The subject of the rebuilding of the cathedral - which was left badly damaged after fire tore through the roof and destroyed the spire on April 15 - has become a fraught battleground between traditionalists who want an exact restoration and others who favour a more imaginative take.
Some of the suggestions have included a rooftop garden, an 'endless spire' of light and a swimming pool on top of the building.
The Senate has now approved the restoration bill already passed by the French parliament to allow work on the structure to be completed in time for the Paris Olympics in 2024 - but requires that the restoration be faithful to the last known visual state of the cathedral, in an attempt to check the government, which has launched an international architectural competition soliciting designs for renovation.
Senators also removed a controversial clause from the law which would give the government the power to override regulations on planning, environmental and heritage protection and public tenders. Many members of the Senate, dominated by the right-wing opposition, have been especially critical of Presidents Macrons promise to finish reconstruction within five years.
Another minor modification is the backdating of a proposed tax break for those who have made donations for the cathedrals reconstruction.

Good. It’s still beautiful, even damaged.
Some sanity for a change.
Butt, butt, butt.............What about a crescent moon and sword atop the spire? Oh, soon enough? Probably.
I didn’t realize the French senate was still French, let alone afraid of The Almighty.
The swimming pool atop the roof makes a lot of sense.
As the North African swarm continues to descend on France, the more fire-proof Notre Dame can be, the better. As more mudslimes learn their arson trades and apply as they can more and more to the Cathedral, an upper pool connected via piping to sprinkler systems, with a hair-triggered smoke/fire detectors will go a long way to protecting the newly repaired structure.
The attempt, at least, must be made to restore history as it is/was.
Did WE lose Gen Lee forever, or will he be back ?
The enemy of man and humanity is working overtime these days to obliterate history and we must not roll over like dogs.
REBUILD NOTRE DAME USING EVERY PHOTOGRAPH EVER TAKEN TO DUPLICATE IT
I'd even go so far as to burn sooty oil to make the walls as was before as possible.
Use Modern materials at least..................
I propose they make it look the same, but they use fireproof materials.....
‘Many members of the Senate, dominated by the right-wing opposition,’
Dang those right-wingers!
If the French Senate has authority in this matter, then this is good.
Somebody needs to use a High pressure washer on that outside..................
Hm. Should have read the article before mouthing off. Senate is not final authority...
let’s just hope the workers don’t damage the flying buttresses during the rebuild. After all the idiots were smoking on the job in the first place and severely damaged the place.
No. Move it to the U.S. and rebuild it stone by stone, before the Muslims destroy it for good.
30 days in jail for attempting to inspiring stupid in otherwise normal people.
LOL, what if they put Trump in charge of it?
Immediate baptism, like it or not. Complete with a certificate.
Just a thought.
Hmm...no minarets. It’s a start.
